Volkswagen ID.3: Starting and driving

Precautions when starting and driving

Basic Information

WARNING

  • Never leave children, elderly passengers, or individuals requiring assistance unattended inside your Nissan Frontier.

Pets must also never be left alone in the vehicle.

Unsupervised occupants may accidentally operate controls or place themselves and others at risk. Additionally, during hot or sunny conditions, the interior temperature of a closed Nissan Frontier can rise rapidly, potentially leading to heatstroke, serious injury, or even fatal consequences for both people and animals.

  • Always secure cargo properly using appropriate ropes, straps, or fastening systems when transporting items in your Nissan Frontier. Avoid stacking cargo above the seatback height.

In the event of sudden braking, sharp maneuvers, or a collision, unsecured cargo may shift, creating a significant risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Exhaust gas (carbon monoxide)

WARNING

  • Do not inhale exhaust gases under any circumstances. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas that can cause unconsciousness or death within a short period.
  • If you suspect that exhaust fumes are entering the cabin of your Nissan Frontier, immediately open all windows fully and have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician without delay.
  • Never operate the engine of your Nissan Frontier in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas such as garages or confined spaces.
  • Avoid leaving the engine running for extended periods while the vehicle is stationary, as this increases the risk of exhaust gas accumulation.
  • Ensure that rear vents, doors, tailgate, and any cargo openings are securely closed while driving your Nissan Frontier to prevent exhaust gases from entering the passenger compartment.

If it is necessary to drive with any of these openings partially open, take the following precautions to maintain proper ventilation:

    1. Open all windows to allow fresh air circulation.
    2. Set the Nissan Frontier air recirculation control button icon air recirculation function to OFF and adjust the fan speed to a high setting to ensure continuous airflow through the cabin.
  • If electrical wiring, towing cables, or additional equipment must pass through body seals (such as the tailgate area), always follow manufacturer recommendations to prevent exhaust gases from entering the Nissan Frontier cabin.
  • The exhaust system and underbody of your Nissan Frontier should be inspected by a qualified technician under the following conditions:
    1. Whenever the vehicle is lifted for maintenance or servicing.
    2. If there is any suspicion that exhaust fumes are entering the interior.
    3. If you notice unusual sounds, vibrations, or changes in exhaust noise.
    4. After any collision or incident involving damage to the rear, underside, or exhaust system of the vehicle.
  • If your Nissan Frontier is equipped with additional accessories such as a camper shell or other modifications, carefully follow the equipment manufacturer's guidelines to minimize the risk of carbon monoxide entering the passenger area.

Do not use or remain in these areas of your Nissan Frontier while the engine is running, even if the vehicle is stationary. Certain recreational or aftermarket equipment such as portable stoves, refrigerators, heaters, or similar devices

may produce carbon monoxide, which can accumulate quickly and create a dangerous environment inside or around the Nissan Frontier.

Three-way catalyst

The three-way catalyst in the Nissan Frontier is a critical emission control component integrated into the exhaust system. It is designed to significantly reduce harmful pollutants by converting exhaust gases through high-temperature chemical reactions.

Within the three-way catalyst, exhaust gases are subjected to elevated temperatures, allowing harmful emissions such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides to be minimized before being released into the atmosphere.

WARNING

The exhaust gases and all components of the exhaust system in your Nissan Frontier become extremely hot during operation. Always keep people, animals, and any flammable materials at a safe distance from these components to avoid burns or fire hazards.

Never park or stop your Nissan Frontier over combustible materials such as dry grass, leaves, paper, or cloth. Heat from the exhaust system may ignite these materials and lead to a fire.

CAUTION

  • Use only unleaded fuel in your Nissan Frontier. Leaded gasoline can cause deposits that severely impair the effectiveness of the three-way catalyst and increase emissions.
  • Ensure that your Nissan Frontier engine is properly maintained and tuned. Faults in ignition, fuel injection, or electrical systems may result in excessive fuel entering the exhaust system, which can cause the catalyst to overheat.

If you experience engine misfires, reduced performance, or unusual operation, stop driving as soon as it is safe and have the vehicle inspected. It is recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for proper diagnosis and repair.

  • Avoid operating your Nissan Frontier with a very low fuel level. Running out of fuel may cause engine misfiring, which can damage the three-way catalyst.
  • Do not excessively rev the engine while it is warming up, as this may negatively affect emission system components.
  • Never attempt to start the Nissan Frontier by pushing or towing the vehicle, as this can lead to damage to the emission control system and other drivetrain components.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Basic Information

For optimal safety and performance of your Nissan Frontier, each tire — including the spare tire (if equipped) — should be inspected at least once a month when cold and inflated to the pressure specified by the manufacturer. These values are listed on the vehicle placard or tire inflation label. If your Nissan Frontier is equipped with tires that differ from the original size, ensure that the correct inflation pressure is determined and maintained for those specific tires.

Basic Information

Routine tire pressure checks are essential for maintaining the safety, efficiency, and durability of your Nissan Frontier. Always verify tire pressure when the tires are cold and adjust according to the recommended values to ensure proper vehicle operation and longevity.

As an additional safety feature, the Nissan Frontier is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This system continuously monitors tire pressure and activates a warning indicator if one or more tires become significantly under-inflated.

When the low tire pressure warning light illuminates, you should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so and check all tires. Inflate them to the recommended pressure immediately to prevent potential damage or unsafe driving conditions.

Operating your Nissan Frontier with under-inflated tires can lead to excessive heat buildup, increasing the risk of tire failure. It can also reduce fuel efficiency, accelerate tire wear, and negatively affect handling, braking, and overall vehicle stability.

It is important to understand that the TPMS is not a replacement for regular tire maintenance. The driver remains responsible for maintaining correct tire pressure, even if the system has not yet triggered a warning.

Your Nissan Frontier is also equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator, which alerts you if the system itself is not functioning correctly.

This malfunction indicator shares the same warning light as the low tire pressure indicator.

If a system fault is detected, the warning light will flash for approximately one minute and then remain steadily illuminated. This pattern will repeat each time the vehicle is started until the issue is resolved.

When the TPMS malfunction indicator is active, the system may not accurately detect or report tire pressure issues. Malfunctions may occur for several reasons, including the installation of non-compatible tires or wheels that interfere with TPMS operation.

After replacing tires or wheels on your Nissan Frontier, always verify that the TPMS warning light operates correctly to ensure that the system continues to function as intended.

Additional information:

  • When a wheel without a TPMS sensor is installed, such as a spare tire, the system will not monitor that tire's pressure.
  • The TPMS in the Nissan Frontier activates only when the vehicle is driven above approximately 16 mph (25 km/h). It may not immediately detect rapid pressure loss, such as a sudden puncture.
  • The low tire pressure warning light will not automatically turn off after adjusting tire pressure. Once the correct pressure is set, drive the vehicle above 16 mph (25 km/h) to allow the system to reset and turn off the warning light.
  • The "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" message will appear in the vehicle information display when low tire pressure is detected. This message will disappear once the issue is corrected and the warning light turns off.
  • This warning message will reappear each time the ignition is turned ON if the issue has not been resolved.
  • The "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" message will not be displayed if the warning light is illuminated due to a TPMS system malfunction rather than actual low tire pressure.
  • Tire pressure in your Nissan Frontier will naturally increase during driving due to heat and may vary depending on outside temperature. Do not reduce tire pressure immediately after driving, as this can result in under-inflation once the tires cool down.

Low ambient temperatures can significantly reduce the air pressure inside the tires of your Nissan Frontier. As temperatures drop, the air inside the tire contracts, which may lead to a noticeable decrease in tire pressure. This condition can trigger the low tire pressure warning light. If this indicator appears, promptly check the pressure of all four tires and adjust them as necessary to the recommended specifications.

  • The Tire and Loading Information label for your Nissan Frontier is located on the driver's side door opening and provides the correct cold tire pressure values.

    WARNING

    • Radio frequency signals generated by the Nissan Frontier TPMS may interfere with certain types of medical devices. Individuals using pacemakers or similar medical equipment should consult the device manufacturer regarding possible interference before operating the vehicle.
    • If the low tire pressure warning light illuminates while driving your Nissan Frontier, avoid sudden steering inputs or hard braking. Gradually reduce speed, safely move to the side of the road, and stop the vehicle as soon as conditions allow.

Driving on under-inflated tires can cause irreversible tire damage and significantly increase the risk of tire failure.

This may also lead to severe vehicle damage, loss of control, and potentially serious accidents resulting in injury.

Check all four tires immediately and inflate them to the specified COLD tire pressure listed on the Tire and Loading Information label. If a tire is punctured or flat, replace it with a spare tire as soon as possible.

    • When a wheel without a TPMS sensor is used on the Nissan Frontier (such as a spare tire), or when tires/wheels are replaced, the TPMS may not function correctly. In such cases, the warning light will flash for approximately one minute and then remain illuminated. Have the system inspected and reset as soon as possible. It is recommended to visit a NISSAN dealer.
    • Installing tires that do not meet Nissan specifications may interfere with the proper operation of the TPMS system in your Nissan Frontier.
    • Avoid using liquid tire sealants or aerosol repair products inside the tires, as these substances can damage TPMS sensors and lead to system malfunction.
    • To reduce the risk of serious injury or fatal accidents, always check tire pressure in all tires regularly, whether as part of routine maintenance or in response to a TPMS warning. Driving with incorrect tire pressure can compromise tire integrity and negatively affect other vehicle systems.

    CAUTION

Do not apply metallic window films or install metal components (such as antennas) directly on the windows of your Nissan Frontier.

These materials can interfere with radio signals transmitted by the tire pressure sensors, potentially causing the TPMS to operate incorrectly or fail to detect pressure changes.

External electronic devices or radio transmitters may temporarily disrupt the operation of the TPMS in your Nissan Frontier, which can result in the low tire pressure warning light being triggered unnecessarily.

Examples of potential interference sources include:

    • Nearby equipment or facilities operating on similar radio frequencies.
    • Transmitters or communication devices being used inside or near the Nissan Frontier.
    • Electronic equipment such as computers or DC/AC power converters operating in close proximity to the vehicle.

The low tire pressure warning light may also illuminate under the following conditions:

    • If the Nissan Frontier is equipped with wheels or tires that do not include TPMS sensors.
    • If TPMS components have been replaced but the sensor identification has not been properly registered in the system.
    • If non-genuine or non-approved wheels are installed that are not specified by NISSAN.

    TPMS with Easy-Fill Tire Alert

    WARNING

After rotating the tires on your Nissan Frontier, do not rely on the Easy-Fill Tire Alert system to set the tire pressure. Always use a reliable tire pressure gauge and adjust the pressure according to the values listed on the Tire and Loading Information label.

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with a TPMS featuring Easy-Fill Tire Alert, which provides both visual and audible signals outside the vehicle. This system helps guide you when inflating under-inflated tires to the correct COLD tire pressure, improving convenience and safety.

    Vehicle set-up

    1. Park your Nissan Frontier on a flat, stable surface in a safe location.

    2. Engage the parking brake and shift the transmission into the P (Park) position.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine.

Ensure the vehicle remains stationary during this process.

    Operation

    1. Begin adding air to the tire that requires inflation.

    2. Within a few seconds, the hazard warning lights on the Nissan Frontier will begin flashing, indicating that the system is actively monitoring pressure.

    3. Once the correct pressure level is reached, the horn will sound once and the hazard lights will stop flashing, confirming proper inflation.

    4. Repeat this procedure for each tire on your Nissan Frontier.

    • If the tire pressure exceeds the recommended level by approximately 4 psi (30 kPa), the horn will sound and the hazard lights will flash three times. To correct this, briefly press the valve stem core to release air. When the correct pressure is achieved, a single horn beep will confirm it.
    • If the hazard lights do not begin flashing within approximately 15 seconds of starting inflation, this indicates that the Easy-Fill Tire Alert system is not currently functioning.
    • The Easy-Fill Tire Alert function in the Nissan Frontier may not operate under the following conditions:
      • Interference from external electronic devices or radio transmitters.
      • Insufficient air pressure from the inflation source.
      • A malfunction within the TPMS system.
      • Failure of the horn or hazard warning light system.
      • The tire pressure sensor ID is not properly registered in the system.
      • The battery of the tire pressure sensor is low.
    • If the Easy-Fill Tire Alert does not operate due to signal interference, move the Nissan Frontier approximately 3 ft (1 m) forward or backward and attempt the procedure again.

If the Easy-Fill Tire Alert system is unavailable or not functioning correctly, always use a manual tire pressure gauge to ensure accurate tire inflation in your Nissan Frontier.

    On-pavement and off-road driving precautions

Utility vehicles such as the Nissan Frontier have a noticeably higher risk of rollover compared to standard passenger vehicles.

Due to its increased ground clearance, the Nissan Frontier is engineered to handle both paved roads and off-road environments. This elevated design improves versatility but also raises the vehicle’s center of gravity compared to conventional cars.

One advantage of this design is improved road visibility, allowing drivers of the Nissan Frontier to better anticipate obstacles and changing driving conditions. However, this same design means the vehicle is not intended for high-speed cornering like low-profile passenger cars. Always avoid aggressive turning or sudden maneuvers at higher speeds.

Like all vehicles in this class, improper handling of the Nissan Frontier may lead to loss of control or rollover situations.

In rollover accidents, occupants who are not wearing seat belts are at a significantly higher risk of fatal injury compared to those who are properly restrained.

    Avoiding collision and rollover

    WARNING

Operating your Nissan Frontier in an unsafe or careless manner can result in loss of vehicle control, serious accidents, or rollover incidents.

Always remain attentive and practice defensive driving techniques when operating your Nissan Frontier.

Follow all traffic laws and avoid excessive speed, abrupt steering inputs, and aggressive cornering. These actions greatly increase the risk of losing control, especially in vehicles with higher centers of gravity.

Loss of control in the Nissan Frontier may result in collisions with other vehicles, roadside objects, or rollover events — particularly if the vehicle begins to slide sideways.

Never drive when fatigued, impaired, or under the influence of alcohol, medications, or drugs that may reduce alertness. Always wear your seat belt and ensure all passengers in your Nissan Frontier are properly restrained.

Seat belts play a critical role in minimizing injuries during collisions and rollovers.

In rollover crashes, individuals not wearing seat belts are far more likely to suffer fatal injuries than those who are properly secured.

    Off-road recovery

While driving your Nissan Frontier, it is possible for one side of the vehicle to unintentionally leave the paved surface. If this occurs, follow these steps to safely regain control.

This procedure is a general guideline. Always adjust your actions based on road, vehicle, and traffic conditions.

    1. Stay calm and avoid panic reactions.

    2. Do not immediately apply the brakes.

    3. Keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel and maintain a straight trajectory.

    4. Gradually ease off the accelerator to reduce speed smoothly.

    5. When conditions allow, gently guide the Nissan Frontier back toward the roadway. Avoid sudden steering corrections until speed has been sufficiently reduced.

    6. Once safe, carefully steer back onto the road surface. When all tires are fully on the pavement, stabilize the vehicle within the correct lane.

    • If returning to the roadway is unsafe due to traffic or terrain conditions, slowly bring the Nissan Frontier to a complete stop in a secure off-road location.

    Rapid air pressure loss

A sudden loss of tire pressure, commonly referred to as a blowout, may occur if a tire is punctured or damaged — for example, by striking a curb or pothole. Driving with under-inflated tires can also contribute to this condition.

In the Nissan Frontier, rapid tire deflation can significantly affect vehicle stability and steering control, particularly at higher speeds.

To reduce the risk of sudden pressure loss, regularly inspect tires and maintain proper inflation levels.

If a blowout occurs while driving your Nissan Frontier, follow these steps to maintain control. This guidance is general and should be adapted to actual conditions.

    WARNING

The following actions increase the risk of losing control of your Nissan Frontier during a sudden tire failure.

Loss of control can result in a serious accident, potentially causing injury or death.

    • The vehicle may pull strongly toward the side of the damaged tire.
    • Do not apply the brakes abruptly.
    • Do not suddenly release the accelerator.
    • Avoid sharp or sudden steering inputs.

    1. Remain calm and maintain control of the Nissan Frontier.

    2. Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands and keep the vehicle traveling straight.

    3. Gradually reduce speed by easing off the accelerator.

    4. Carefully steer the vehicle toward a safe location away from traffic.

    5. Apply the brakes gently to bring the Nissan Frontier to a controlled stop.

    6. Activate the hazard warning lights and contact roadside assistance to replace the tire safely.

    Drinking alcohol/drugs and driving

    WARNING

Never operate your Nissan Frontier while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol in the bloodstream significantly reduces coordination, slows reaction time, and impairs judgment, making driving extremely dangerous.

Driving after consuming alcohol greatly increases the risk of being involved in a serious accident that may result in injury or loss of life for you, your passengers, or others on the road.

In addition, alcohol can worsen injuries sustained during a crash, making outcomes far more severe.

NISSAN strongly promotes safe and responsible driving practices. However, the final decision rests with the driver. Every year, thousands of accidents are caused by impaired driving. Even when within legal limits, alcohol affects individuals differently, and many drivers underestimate its impact on their ability to control a vehicle such as the Nissan Frontier.

Always remember: drinking and driving do not mix. This applies equally to prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal substances. Never drive your Nissan Frontier if your physical or mental condition is compromised in any way.

    Driving safety precautions

Your Nissan Frontier is engineered for both on-road comfort and light off-road capability. However, it is not designed for extreme off-road conditions. Avoid driving through deep water, heavy mud, or terrain that exceeds the vehicle’s intended capabilities.

Keep in mind that 2-Wheel Drive versions of the Nissan Frontier have reduced traction and recovery ability compared to 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) models, especially in snow, mud, or uneven terrain.

Please carefully follow these important precautions when driving your Nissan Frontier:

    WARNING

    • Drive cautiously when off-road and avoid hazardous terrain. All occupants of the Nissan Frontier must remain seated and properly secured with seat belts at all times, especially when driving over uneven surfaces.
    • Avoid driving across steep slopes. Instead, approach hills directly up or down. The Nissan Frontier, like all utility vehicles, is more prone to tipping sideways than forward or backward.
    • Some slopes are too steep for any vehicle. Attempting to climb them may cause engine stall, while descending may result in loss of braking control. Driving across such slopes significantly increases rollover risk.
    • Do not change gears while descending hills, as this can lead to loss of vehicle stability and control.
    • Be extremely cautious when reaching the top of a hill. There may be unseen hazards such as drop-offs or obstacles.
    • If your Nissan Frontier cannot reach the top of a hill or stalls, never attempt to turn around. This can cause rollover. Always reverse straight down in R (Reverse). Never rely solely on brakes in Neutral.
    • Excessive braking on downhill slopes may overheat the brakes, reducing their effectiveness. Use engine braking and low gears to maintain safe speed.
    • Loose cargo can shift during off-road driving. Always secure all items properly to prevent injury in the Nissan Frontier cabin.
    • Do not overload the roof rack. Keep heavy items low and toward the front of the cargo area. Overloading raises the center of gravity and increases rollover risk.
    • Use only tires specified for the Nissan Frontier. Larger or incompatible tires can negatively affect handling and safety.
    • When driving off-road, hold the steering wheel properly. Do not place your thumbs inside the wheel, as sudden movement may cause injury.
    • Ensure all occupants are wearing seat belts before driving.
    • Always keep floor mats properly installed to prevent contact with hot surfaces.
    • Reduce speed in strong crosswinds. The Nissan Frontier’s higher center of gravity makes it more sensitive to side winds.
    • Do not exceed the traction limits of your tires, even when 4WD is engaged.
    • On 4WD models, never lift two wheels off the ground and engage drive gears with the engine running. This may cause serious drivetrain damage or unexpected vehicle movement.
    • Do not test a Nissan Frontier 4WD vehicle on a two-wheel dynamometer. Always inform service personnel that the vehicle is equipped with 4WD to avoid damage or accidents.
    • Aggressive acceleration, sudden braking, or sharp steering may result in loss of control.
    • Avoid high-speed cornering. Due to its design, the Nissan Frontier cannot safely handle turns at the same speeds as standard passenger vehicles.
    • Always use identical tires on all four wheels. When driving on slippery surfaces, install chains on the rear wheels and proceed carefully.
    • Inspect the brakes immediately after driving through water or mud to ensure proper operation.
    • Avoid parking on steep inclines. The Nissan Frontier may roll unexpectedly, posing a risk of injury.
    • Frequent maintenance is required after driving through deep sand, mud, or water reaching the wheel hubs.

    Push-button ignition switch

    Basic Information

Nissan Frontier push-button ignition switch dashboard control

    WARNING

Never operate the push-button ignition switch of your Nissan Frontier while the vehicle is in motion, except in a true emergency. (The engine can be forced to stop if the ignition switch is pressed three times rapidly or pressed and held for more than 2 seconds.) If the engine shuts off while driving, you may lose control of the Nissan Frontier, which can result in a serious accident and severe injury.

In the Nissan Frontier, when the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the system cycles through different ignition modes. Each press changes the vehicle status as follows:

    • First press: switches to ACC (accessory mode).
    • Second press: switches to ON (full electrical system activation).
    • Third press: returns to OFF.

The ignition system of the Nissan Frontier is designed with automatic safety logic. When the ignition is in the OFF position, opening or closing any door will cause the system to automatically return to the LOCK position.

If the ignition switch cannot be turned to the OFF position, follow this safe recovery procedure for your Nissan Frontier:

    1. Move the shift lever securely into the P (Park) position.

    2. Press the ignition switch once — the system will change to the ON position.

    3. Press the ignition switch again to switch the system to OFF.

The shift lever in the Nissan Frontier can only be moved out of the P (Park) position when the ignition is in the ON position and the brake pedal is firmly depressed.

If the vehicle battery is discharged, the ignition switch of the Nissan Frontier may remain locked in the LOCK position and cannot be changed.

Various system indicators and warning messages related to ignition operation may appear in the instrument cluster display of the Nissan Frontier to guide the driver.

    Operating range

Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key operating range illustration

The Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier operates only when the key is within the defined operating range. This ensures both convenience and security when starting the engine.

If the Intelligent Key battery becomes weak or if strong electromagnetic interference is present, the effective operating range may be reduced, and the Nissan Frontier may not recognize the key properly.

When the Intelligent Key is inside the vehicle, even if it is not held by the driver, the engine of the Nissan Frontier can still be started by pressing the ignition button.

The valid operating range for engine start functionality is generally limited to the interior cabin area of the Nissan Frontier 1.

    • The luggage compartment is typically outside the official detection zone, although in some cases the Intelligent Key may still function.
    • If the Intelligent Key is placed on the dashboard, inside the glove box, door pockets, or storage compartments, signal detection may be inconsistent and the Nissan Frontier may not start reliably.
    • If the Intelligent Key is located very close to the vehicle exterior, such as near a window or door, the system may still detect it and allow ignition operation.

For optimal reliability and safety, always keep the Intelligent Key within the passenger compartment and avoid placing it near electronic interference sources when operating your Nissan Frontier.

    Push-button ignition switch positions

    LOCK (Normal parking position)

In the Nissan Frontier, the LOCK position represents the standard parking mode, where the ignition system is fully secured and the vehicle cannot be operated. The ignition switch can only be locked in this position.

When carrying the Intelligent Key, pressing the ignition switch will unlock the system and allow it to transition to the ON position.

For added safety, the Nissan Frontier automatically returns the ignition switch to the LOCK state when any door is opened or closed while the ignition is in the OFF position, helping prevent unintended vehicle operation.

    ACC (Accessories)

The ACC (Accessory) mode in the Nissan Frontier enables the use of electrical components such as the audio system, infotainment features, and power outlets without starting the engine.

To protect the battery, the Nissan Frontier is equipped with a battery saver function. This system automatically switches the ignition from ACC to OFF after a period of inactivity when the following conditions are met:

    • All doors are fully closed.
    • The shift lever is positioned in P (Park).
    • Hazard warning lights are turned off.
    • Turn signals are not active.

The battery saver feature will be interrupted if any of the following actions occur:

    • Any door is opened.
    • The shift lever is moved out of the P (Park) position.
    • The ignition mode is changed manually.
    • The hazard lights are activated.

    ON (Normal operating position)

In the ON position, all electrical systems of the Nissan Frontier are fully activated, including engine control systems and onboard electronics. This is the standard mode used for normal vehicle operation.

Similar to ACC mode, the Nissan Frontier also includes a battery protection feature in ON mode when the engine is not running. After a certain period, the system will automatically switch to OFF if the following conditions are present:

    • All doors are closed.
    • The transmission is in P (Park).
    • Hazard lights are off.
    • Turn signals are not in use.

The battery saver system will be canceled if any of the following occur:

    • A door is opened.
    • The shift lever is moved out of P (Park).
    • The ignition switch position is changed.
    • The hazard lights are turned on.
    • The turn signals are activated.

    CAUTION

Do not leave your Nissan Frontier with the ignition switch in the ACC or ON position while the engine is off for extended periods. This can lead to battery discharge and may prevent the vehicle from starting.

    OFF

The OFF position indicates that the engine of the Nissan Frontier has been turned off and the ignition system is no longer active. In this state, most electrical systems are disabled to preserve battery life.

    Emergency engine shut off

In emergency situations while driving your Nissan Frontier, the engine can be shut down using the push-button ignition system by performing one of the following actions:

    • Press the ignition switch rapidly three times within approximately 1.5 seconds, or
    • Press and hold the ignition switch continuously for more than 2 seconds.

This function should only be used in critical situations, as shutting off the engine while driving can affect steering and braking performance.

    Automatic engine shut-off

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with an automatic engine shut-off system designed to prevent unnecessary idling and reduce fuel consumption. If the engine is left running for an extended period while the vehicle is stationary, the system will automatically turn the engine off.

    This function operates when:

    • The shift lever is in P (Park) for automatic transmission models, or
    • The transmission is in N (Neutral) with the parking brake engaged for manual transmission models.

During the final 30 seconds before shutdown, a notification will appear in the vehicle information display of the Nissan Frontier.

At this stage, the driver can choose one of the following options using the steering wheel controls:

    • Select "OK" to confirm shutdown. If no selection is made, the system will automatically turn off the engine.
    • Select "Disable" to temporarily prevent engine shutdown for the current driving session. This setting will reset after the engine is restarted.

    NOTE:

    • The idle timer will reset if the brake or accelerator pedal is pressed, delaying the automatic shut-off of the Nissan Frontier engine.
    • The automatic engine shut-off feature will reactivate each time the engine is restarted.

    NISSAN Intelligent Key battery discharge

Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key emergency start procedure with discharged battery

If the battery in the NISSAN Intelligent Key of your Nissan Frontier becomes depleted, or if external conditions interfere with signal transmission, the engine can still be started by following the procedure below. This backup method ensures reliable operation of the Nissan Frontier even when the key battery is weak.

    1. Place the shift lever securely in the P (Park) position.

    2. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.

    3. Touch the ignition switch directly with the Intelligent Key as illustrated. (A confirmation chime will sound.)

After completing step 3, pressing the ignition switch without depressing the brake pedal will switch the system to the ON position.

    4. Within 10 seconds after the chime sounds, press the ignition switch while continuing to depress the brake pedal. The engine of your Nissan Frontier will start.

    NOTE:

    • When the Nissan Frontier is started using this emergency method or when the ignition is switched to ON, an Intelligent Key battery discharge warning may appear in the vehicle information display, even if the key is inside the vehicle. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.

To clear the warning message, touch the ignition switch again with the Intelligent Key.

    • If the Intelligent Key battery warning appears, replace the battery as soon as possible to ensure proper operation of your Nissan Frontier.

    NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with an advanced NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System designed to prevent unauthorized engine start. The engine will only start when a properly registered Intelligent Key is detected.

If the engine does not start even with a registered key — for example, due to signal interference from another key, electronic device, or payment transponder — follow this reset procedure:

    1. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF or LOCK position and wait about 10 seconds.

    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

    Driving the vehicle

    Engine protection mode

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with an advanced engine protection mode designed to help prevent engine damage when operating conditions become too extreme. This feature is especially important during demanding situations such as towing heavy loads, climbing steep inclines, or driving in very hot weather.

When the engine coolant temperature rises beyond a safe threshold, the Nissan Frontier will automatically activate this protection mode to reduce stress on the engine components. At this point, you may notice the following behavior:

    • The engine coolant temperature gauge will move toward the H (high) position.
    • The Nissan Frontier engine output may be reduced to limit heat generation.
    • The air conditioning system may temporarily disable its cooling function to reduce engine load, although the blower fan will continue to operate.

As part of this protective strategy, engine performance and, in some cases, vehicle speed will decrease. While the accelerator pedal will still respond, the Nissan Frontier may not accelerate as expected due to the system prioritizing engine protection over performance.

During this condition, the transmission may automatically adjust by downshifting or upshifting at preset points to support cooling. Manual gear selection may also be used if equipped, allowing the driver to better control engine load.

Once driving conditions improve and the engine temperature returns to a normal range, the Nissan Frontier will gradually restore full engine power. The air conditioning system will also automatically resume normal cooling operation.

If the engine temperature remains elevated or the system does not return to normal operation, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate. If the light remains on, the Nissan Frontier does not necessarily require towing, but it should be inspected as soon as possible. It is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a NISSAN dealer to prevent further issues.

    WARNING

Engine overheating in the Nissan Frontier can result in reduced power and lower vehicle speed. This may create dangerous situations, especially in traffic where surrounding vehicles are moving faster.

Drive with extreme caution if this condition occurs. If your Nissan Frontier cannot maintain a safe speed, carefully pull over to a safe location, stop the vehicle, and allow the engine to cool before continuing.

    CAUTION

Operating the Nissan Frontier with the engine oil pressure warning light illuminated can cause severe and immediate engine damage. This type of damage is not covered under warranty. If this warning appears, stop the engine as soon as it is safe and investigate the issue before continuing to drive.

Regular maintenance, proper coolant levels, and avoiding excessive engine load will help ensure that the Nissan Frontier engine protection system operates effectively and prolongs engine life.

To move to a higher gear range in the Nissan Frontier, push the shift lever toward the + (up) position. This allows smooth and controlled gear progression.

    When shifting down

To select a lower gear, move the shift lever toward the − (down) position. This is useful for increasing engine braking or preparing for acceleration.

    (Shifts to a lower range.)

    • The Nissan Frontier transmission will automatically downshift within the selected range as needed. For example, if M3 is selected, the system may shift between 3rd and 1st gear depending on driving conditions.
    • Quickly moving the shift lever twice in the same direction allows the Nissan Frontier to shift through multiple gear ranges consecutively, providing faster response when needed.

When canceling the manual shift mode

To return the Nissan Frontier transmission to fully automatic operation, simply move the shift lever back to the D (Drive) position. This restores normal driving mode.

    Starting

Accelerator downshift - in D (Drive) position -

For overtaking or climbing hills in the Nissan Frontier, fully depress the accelerator pedal. This triggers a downshift to a lower gear, delivering increased power based on the current vehicle speed.

    High fluid temperature protection mode

The Nissan Frontier transmission is equipped with a high fluid temperature protection system. If transmission fluid temperature rises excessively — such as during towing heavy loads uphill in hot conditions — the system will automatically reduce engine output and, in some cases, vehicle speed to help protect the transmission from damage.

Although acceleration may feel limited, the Nissan Frontier can still be controlled using the accelerator pedal. As temperatures normalize, full performance will be gradually restored.

    Fail-safe

If the Nissan Frontier is operated under extreme conditions, such as excessive wheel spin followed by sudden braking, the fail-safe system may activate to protect key components.

When this occurs, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate, indicating that the vehicle has entered fail-safe mode.

This behavior can occur even when all electrical systems are functioning correctly, as it is designed to prevent potential mechanical damage.

In such cases, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and wait approximately 10 seconds.

Then switch the ignition back to ON. In most cases, the Nissan Frontier will return to normal operation. If normal function is not restored, the transmission should be inspected and serviced by a qualified technician. It is recommended to visit an authorized NISSAN dealer.

    WARNING

When high fluid temperature protection mode or fail-safe mode is activated in the Nissan Frontier, vehicle speed may decrease significantly. This reduced speed may be lower than surrounding traffic, increasing the risk of an accident. Always remain alert, drive cautiously, and if necessary, pull over to a safe location to allow the transmission to cool or to seek professional assistance.

    • The LDW system in the Nissan Frontier may also behave unpredictably or provide incorrect alerts under the following situations:
      • On roads with multiple lane markings, faded or poorly painted lines, non-standard markings, or lane markers obscured by water, dirt, or snow.
      • Where old or partially removed lane markings remain visible and may confuse the system.
      • On roads with sharp curves where lane tracking becomes more complex.
      • In areas with high visual contrast, such as shadows, standing water, snow patches, wheel ruts, or seams from road repairs, which may be mistakenly detected as lane lines.
      • When lanes merge, split, or change direction unexpectedly.
      • When the Nissan Frontier is not aligned properly within the lane or is traveling at an angle relative to the lane markers.
      • When following another vehicle too closely, which may block the camera’s view of the lane markings.
      • If the windshield area in front of the camera is obstructed by rain, snow, dirt, or any foreign objects.
      • When the headlights are dim due to contamination or improper alignment, reducing visibility for the system.
      • When intense light enters the camera lens, such as direct sunlight during sunrise or sunset.
      • When rapid changes in lighting occur, for example when entering or exiting tunnels or passing under bridges.

Understanding these limitations is essential for safe operation of the Nissan Frontier. The LDW system is designed to assist—not replace—the driver, and should always be used in combination with attentive and responsible driving habits.

    System temporarily disabled

Under certain environmental conditions, the Lane Departure Warning system in the Nissan Frontier may be temporarily unavailable. For example, if the Nissan Frontier is parked for an extended period in direct sunlight and the interior temperature rises above approximately 104ºF (40ºC), the system may automatically deactivate to protect its components. In this case, the LDW indicator will flash in white and a message such as "Not Available High Camera Temp." will be displayed in the vehicle information screen. Once the cabin temperature decreases to a normal range, the LDW system in your Nissan Frontier will automatically resume normal operation without requiring any driver intervention.

In addition, the LDW system in the Nissan Frontier is intentionally designed not to issue warnings in specific situations, including:

    • When the turn signal is activated and the vehicle is deliberately changing lanes in the indicated direction. The system will automatically reactivate approximately 2 seconds after the turn signal is switched off.
    • When the vehicle speed drops below approximately 37 mph (60 km/h), at which point the LDW system is not active.

Once these conditions are no longer present and all required operating parameters are met, the LDW system in the Nissan Frontier will resume its normal monitoring and warning functionality.

    System malfunction

If a malfunction is detected in the LDW system of the Nissan Frontier, the system will automatically deactivate to prevent incorrect warnings. In such cases, the LDW indicator will blink in yellow and a "Malfunction" message will appear in the vehicle information display. If this occurs, safely pull over to a secure location, bring the vehicle to a complete stop, shift into P (Park), and turn the ignition OFF. Then restart the engine. If the warning message persists, the system should be inspected as soon as possible. For optimal reliability and safety of your Nissan Frontier, it is strongly recommended to have the system checked by an authorized NISSAN dealer.

    Blind Spot Warning (BSW)

    Basic Information

    WARNING

Failure to carefully follow all warnings and instructions regarding the Blind Spot Warning system in the Nissan Frontier may lead to serious injury or even fatal accidents.

    • The BSW system in the Nissan Frontier is designed as a driver assistance feature and must never be considered a substitute for attentive driving. It does not prevent collisions with vehicles or obstacles. When changing lanes, always check mirrors, glance over your shoulder, and ensure the path is clear before maneuvering. Never rely solely on the Nissan Frontier BSW system.
    • Avoid using the BSW system in your Nissan Frontier while towing a trailer or carrying oversized loads, as the radar sensors may not function correctly under these conditions.

The Blind Spot Warning system in the Nissan Frontier enhances driver awareness by detecting vehicles traveling in adjacent lanes, especially in areas that are difficult to see using mirrors alone. This advanced feature helps provide additional confidence when performing lane changes on highways or busy roads.

    WARNING

The following information outlines important limitations of the Blind Spot Warning system in the Nissan Frontier. Ignoring these limitations or relying solely on the system may result in serious injury or even fatal accidents. Always maintain full driver awareness and control.

    • The BSW system in the Nissan Frontier cannot detect every vehicle or object under all possible driving conditions. It is intended as a support feature, not a replacement for attentive driving.
    • The radar sensors of the Nissan Frontier may not detect certain types of objects or vehicles, including:
      • Pedestrians, cyclists, or animals.
      • Motorcycles, very low-profile vehicles, or vehicles with unusually high ground clearance.
      • Oncoming vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.
      • Vehicles already present in the detection zone when accelerating from a complete stop.
      • Vehicles merging into an adjacent lane at approximately the same speed as your Nissan Frontier.
      • Vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear.
      • Vehicles that your Nissan Frontier overtakes quickly.
      • Vehicles passing through the detection zone in a very short time.
      • Multiple vehicles traveling closely together, where those behind the first vehicle may not be detected accurately.
    • The detection zone of the Nissan Frontier BSW system is calibrated for standard lane widths. On wider roads, vehicles in adjacent lanes may not be detected. On narrower roads, the system may mistakenly detect vehicles that are actually two lanes away.
    • The radar sensors are designed to ignore stationary objects in most cases. However, objects such as guardrails, walls, vegetation, or parked vehicles may occasionally be detected. This behavior is considered normal for the Nissan Frontier BSW system.
    • The ability of the Nissan Frontier radar sensors to detect vehicles may be reduced under certain environmental conditions, including:
      • Heavy rain, snow, or fog.
      • Road spray or water mist from other vehicles.
      • Ice, frost, snow, or dirt accumulation on the rear bumper area where the sensors are located.
    • Avoid attaching stickers, applying additional paint, or installing accessories near the radar sensors on your Nissan Frontier, as this can interfere with proper detection performance.

The system continuously adapts to the speed of the leading vehicle and adjusts your Nissan Frontier accordingly, or maintains the selected cruising speed when the lane ahead is clear.

This advanced feature enhances driving comfort in the Nissan Frontier by assisting the driver during steady highway travel or moderate traffic conditions, particularly when following vehicles moving in the same direction and lane.

If the front radar sensor 1 in the Nissan Frontier detects a slower-moving vehicle ahead, the system will automatically reduce speed to maintain the selected distance, ensuring smoother and safer following behavior.

The Nissan Frontier ICC system controls engine throttle and can apply braking force (up to approximately 40% of total braking capacity) when necessary to regulate speed and maintain spacing.

    Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode operation

Nissan Frontier Intelligent Cruise Control following distance adjustment illustration

The vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode in the Nissan Frontier is engineered to automatically adjust speed based on traffic flow and maintain a consistent gap between your vehicle and the one ahead. It can reduce speed as needed and, if the leading vehicle comes to a stop, the Nissan Frontier will decelerate to a complete stop within system limits.

However, it is important to note that the ICC system in the Nissan Frontier is limited to approximately 40% of the total braking force. This means that in situations requiring rapid deceleration, the driver must intervene by braking manually.

The Nissan Frontier ICC system is most effective in conditions where traffic moves at relatively stable speeds or changes gradually. If another vehicle suddenly cuts into your lane or the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, the system may not react quickly enough to maintain a safe distance.

In such situations, the Nissan Frontier will alert the driver with an audible warning and visual indicators on the display, prompting immediate driver action to ensure safety.

The system will automatically cancel operation and sound a warning if the vehicle speed drops below approximately 15 mph (25 km/h) and no vehicle is detected ahead. It will also deactivate if the vehicle exceeds the maximum set cruise speed.

The following functions are managed by the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode in the Nissan Frontier:

    • When no vehicle is detected ahead, the Nissan Frontier maintains the driver-selected cruising speed. The adjustable speed range typically falls between approximately 20 and 90 mph (30 to 144 km/h).
    • When a vehicle is detected ahead, the Nissan Frontier automatically adjusts speed to maintain the selected following distance. If the leading vehicle slows down or stops, the system will decelerate your vehicle accordingly, potentially bringing it to a complete stop within system capabilities.

For optimal safety and performance, always monitor traffic conditions when using the Nissan Frontier ICC system and be prepared to take control whenever necessary.

If the Nissan Frontier ICC system determines that the vehicle has come to a complete stop, it will automatically cancel operation and emit a warning chime to notify the driver.

  • When the vehicle ahead in the Nissan Frontier leaves its lane or is no longer detected, the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode will smoothly accelerate and return to the previously set cruising speed.

The Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system in the Nissan Frontier is not designed to detect or respond effectively to stationary objects or very slow-moving vehicles. Therefore, drivers must remain attentive and manually control the vehicle when approaching situations such as traffic congestion, toll booths, or stopped traffic.

Nissan Frontier ICC adjusting speed when approaching slower vehicle ahead

While driving the Nissan Frontier on highways at a preset speed, if a slower vehicle is detected ahead, the ICC system will automatically reduce speed to maintain the selected following distance. Once the lane ahead becomes clear—such as when the leading vehicle exits or changes lanes—the Nissan Frontier will accelerate back to the preset speed.

During this automatic acceleration, the driver should stay alert and maintain full control of the Nissan Frontier, as rapid changes in traffic conditions may require immediate intervention.

On winding roads or steep inclines, the Nissan Frontier may not consistently maintain the preset speed due to system limitations. In such cases, manual speed control by the driver is necessary to ensure safe operation.

Under normal conditions, the ICC system in the Nissan Frontier continuously adjusts speed—either accelerating or decelerating—based on the behavior of the vehicle ahead, providing a smoother and more relaxed driving experience.

However, the driver must take over when additional acceleration is needed, such as during lane changes. Press the accelerator pedal to safely increase speed when required.

Likewise, if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly or another vehicle merges into your lane, you must apply the brakes manually to maintain a safe following distance. The Nissan Frontier ICC system is a supportive feature, but it cannot replace driver awareness and quick decision-making.

Always remain vigilant and ready to react when using the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Cruise Control system, especially in dynamic or unpredictable traffic environments.

For optimal performance of the Nissan Frontier ICC system, ensure proper driving conditions and always monitor system indicators to confirm correct operation.

The driver of the Nissan Frontier selects the desired cruising speed according to current road and traffic conditions. Once set, the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system maintains this speed in a manner similar to traditional cruise control, provided no vehicle is detected ahead in the same lane. The selected speed is clearly displayed in the Nissan Frontier instrument cluster for continuous driver awareness.

    Vehicle detected ahead

When the Nissan Frontier detects a vehicle traveling ahead, the ICC system automatically adjusts speed by reducing engine power and applying braking as needed. This allows the Nissan Frontier to match the speed of the leading vehicle while maintaining the driver-selected following distance for improved safety and comfort.

    NOTE:

    • When the ICC system in the Nissan Frontier applies braking, the brake lights will illuminate to alert vehicles behind you.
    • During automatic braking, you may notice operational sounds. This is a normal characteristic of the Nissan Frontier system and does not indicate a malfunction.

When a vehicle is detected ahead, the vehicle detection indicator will illuminate, confirming that the Nissan Frontier ICC system is actively tracking traffic.

At the same time, the Nissan Frontier display will show both the set cruising speed and the selected following distance, providing clear feedback to the driver.

    Vehicle ahead not detected

If the vehicle ahead is no longer detected, the Nissan Frontier ICC system will smoothly accelerate the vehicle back to the previously set cruising speed. Once the target speed is reached, the system will maintain it automatically.

When no vehicle is detected, the vehicle detection indicator in the Nissan Frontier will turn off, signaling open road conditions.

If another vehicle enters the lane while the Nissan Frontier is accelerating or operating under ICC control, the system will immediately adjust speed to maintain the appropriate distance.

If no vehicle is detected and the Nissan Frontier speed drops below approximately 15 mph (25 km/h), the ICC system will automatically cancel operation.

Nissan Frontier ICC speed exceeding set speed during overtaking

While overtaking another vehicle in the Nissan Frontier, the set speed indicator A may flash if the actual vehicle speed temporarily exceeds the preset value. Once the lane ahead is clear, the vehicle detection indicator will turn off. After releasing the accelerator pedal, the Nissan Frontier will return to the previously set cruising speed.

Even when the Nissan Frontier ICC system is active, the driver can press the accelerator pedal at any time to achieve quicker acceleration when needed, such as during overtaking maneuvers.

Nissan Frontier ICC distance control display and settings interface

How to change the set distance to the vehicle ahead

In the Nissan Frontier, the following distance to the vehicle ahead can be adjusted at any time—either while the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system is in standby mode or actively controlling speed—depending on current traffic and driving conditions. This flexibility allows the Nissan Frontier driver to tailor the driving experience for both comfort and safety.

Each time the distance Nissan Frontier distance control button on steering wheel switch A is pressed, the selected following distance will cycle through three preset levels: long, medium, and short, before returning to long again. This intuitive system in the Nissan Frontier ensures quick adjustments without distraction.

    1. Distance: Long

    • 200 (60)

    2. Distance: Middle

    • 150 (45)

    3. Distance: Short

    • 90 (30)
    • The following distance in the Nissan Frontier dynamically adjusts according to vehicle speed.

At higher speeds, the system automatically increases the gap to enhance safety and provide sufficient braking distance.

    • The selected distance setting remains stored even after the Nissan Frontier engine is turned off and restarted, ensuring consistent driver preferences.

    Approach warning

If the Nissan Frontier approaches a vehicle ahead too quickly—such as when that vehicle brakes suddenly or another vehicle merges into your lane—the ICC system will alert the driver with an audible chime and a visual warning on the display. In such situations, the driver must immediately reduce speed by applying the brake pedal to maintain a safe distance.

    • The warning chime is activated.
    • The vehicle ahead detection indicator flashes.

However, in certain situations, the Nissan Frontier ICC warning chime may not activate even when the distance is short. Examples include:

    • When both vehicles are traveling at similar speeds and the distance remains constant.
    • When the vehicle ahead accelerates, increasing the gap.
    • When another vehicle merges very close to your Nissan Frontier.

The warning chime will also not sound under the following conditions:

    • When approaching stationary or very slow-moving vehicles.
    • When the driver presses the accelerator pedal, temporarily overriding the Nissan Frontier ICC system.

    NOTE:

The Nissan Frontier ICC system may occasionally detect roadside objects or vehicles in adjacent lanes, which can trigger warnings or cause slight speed adjustments. This behavior is more likely on winding roads, narrow lanes, hills, or when entering and exiting curves. In such cases, the driver should maintain full control and manually manage the distance to the vehicle ahead.

Additionally, sensor performance in the Nissan Frontier may be influenced by driving behavior (such as steering input or lane positioning) as well as environmental or vehicle conditions (for example, if the vehicle has sustained damage or is operating in heavy traffic).

    Automatic cancellation

The Nissan Frontier ICC system will automatically deactivate and emit a warning chime under the following conditions:

    • When no vehicle is detected ahead and the Nissan Frontier speed drops below approximately 15 mph (25 km/h).
    • When the system determines that the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
    • When the shift lever is moved out of the D (Drive), Manual mode, or L (Low) range.
    • When the parking brake is engaged.
    • When the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is turned off.
    • When the VDC system is actively intervening.
    • When sensor visibility is impaired due to dirt, snow, or other obstructions.
    • When wheel slip is detected.
    • When the radar signal is temporarily interrupted.

For optimal performance of the Nissan Frontier ICC system, always ensure sensors are clean and remain attentive to surrounding traffic conditions.

    Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode limitations

    WARNING

The following section outlines important limitations of the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system in the Nissan Frontier. Ignoring these limitations or relying too heavily on the system may lead to dangerous situations, including serious injury or fatal accidents.

    • The Nissan Frontier ICC system is designed primarily for use on straight, dry highways with light and steady traffic. It is not intended for use in dense urban environments, stop-and-go traffic, or highly congested roads where constant manual intervention is required.
    • The system does not automatically adapt to changing road conditions. For safe operation in the Nissan Frontier, use ICC only in stable driving environments. Avoid activating the system on roads with sharp curves, slippery surfaces such as ice or snow, or during adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or fog.
    • Due to inherent system limitations, the Nissan Frontier ICC must never be relied upon as a substitute for attentive driving. It cannot compensate for driver distraction, poor visibility, or sudden hazards. Always be prepared to reduce speed manually using the brake pedal to maintain a safe following distance.
    • If the vehicle ahead comes to a complete stop, the Nissan Frontier will decelerate and may stop within system limits.

Once a full stop is detected, the system will cancel and emit a warning chime. The driver must immediately press the brake pedal to keep the vehicle stationary and maintain control.

    • Always stay attentive and ready to take over vehicle control. In certain driving situations, the Nissan Frontier ICC system may not maintain the selected speed or distance accurately due to environmental or traffic variables.
    • The system may fail to detect vehicles ahead under specific conditions. To reduce the risk of accidents, do not use the Nissan Frontier ICC system in the following situations:
      • Heavy traffic or roads with sharp curves
      • Slippery surfaces such as snow, ice, or wet roads
      • Severe weather conditions including rain, fog, or snow
      • When non-recommended tires or wheels are installed
      • When dirt, snow, or debris covers the radar sensor area
      • On steep downhill slopes where vehicle speed may exceed the set speed and braking may overheat
      • On roads with frequent elevation changes (uphill/downhill)
      • When traffic flow is inconsistent with frequent acceleration and braking
      • In areas with interference from other radar sources
    • Do not use the Nissan Frontier ICC system while towing a trailer, as detection capability may be compromised.
    • Unexpected objects or vehicles entering the sensor detection zone may trigger sudden automatic braking. Always remain alert and avoid using ICC in environments where unpredictable conditions are likely.

The radar sensor in the Nissan Frontier ICC system may not detect the following:

    • Stationary or very slow-moving vehicles
    • Pedestrians or obstacles in the roadway
    • Oncoming traffic within the same lane
    • Motorcycles or vehicles traveling offset within the lane

The system relies on reflected signals from vehicles ahead. If these signals are weak or absent, the Nissan Frontier ICC system may fail to maintain the correct following distance.

Examples of situations where detection may be reduced include:

    • Snow, spray, or dirt affecting sensor visibility
    • Towing a trailer or additional equipment
    • Heavy cargo loading in the rear of the Nissan Frontier affecting vehicle angle

The Nissan Frontier ICC system continuously monitors sensor functionality. If the radar sensor becomes blocked or contaminated, the system may deactivate automatically.

If the sensor is obstructed by ice, dirt, or transparent materials, the system may fail to detect objects correctly and may not cancel as expected. In such cases, the vehicle may not maintain a safe following distance.

Regular inspection and cleaning of the radar sensor area is essential to ensure proper operation of the Nissan Frontier ICC system.

The detection range of the radar sensor is limited. For accurate operation, the vehicle ahead must remain within the detection zone.

Vehicles may temporarily leave this zone due to lane positioning. Motorcycles or smaller vehicles may not be detected if they are not centered within the lane. Similarly, vehicles merging into your lane may not be detected until they are fully aligned.

If this occurs, the Nissan Frontier ICC system may issue a warning by flashing indicators and sounding a chime. The driver must immediately take control and adjust the following distance manually.

Nissan Frontier ICC radar detection zone example on curved road

Nissan Frontier ICC sensor behavior in complex driving conditions

On winding, narrow, hilly, or construction-affected roads, the Nissan Frontier radar system may detect vehicles in adjacent lanes or temporarily lose detection of the vehicle ahead. This may result in unexpected acceleration or deceleration.

Sensor performance may also vary depending on driving behavior, such as steering input or lane positioning, as well as vehicle condition.

If such behavior occurs, the Nissan Frontier ICC system may generate unexpected warnings. The driver must remain attentive and manually control the distance to ensure safe driving at all times.

    System temporarily unavailable

Nissan Frontier ICC system temporary unavailable warning display

The following situations describe when the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system in the Nissan Frontier may become temporarily unavailable. In these cases, the Nissan Frontier ICC system may not disengage as expected and may be unable to maintain the selected following distance from the vehicle ahead, requiring immediate driver attention.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection

    Basic Information

    WARNING

Failure to follow the safety instructions and proper usage guidelines for the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system in the Nissan Frontier may result in serious injury, severe accidents, or even fatal consequences.

    • The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system in the Nissan Frontier is designed as an advanced driver-assistance feature and should only be considered a supplemental aid. It does not replace the driver’s responsibility to remain attentive and maintain full control of the vehicle at all times.

This system cannot compensate for unsafe driving behavior, distraction, or aggressive driving. Always operate your Nissan Frontier with caution and awareness of surrounding traffic conditions.

    • The Nissan Frontier AEB with Pedestrian Detection system may not operate effectively in all traffic, weather, or road conditions, including situations with limited visibility or complex driving environments.

The Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system in the Nissan Frontier is engineered to assist the driver in reducing the likelihood or severity of frontal collisions. It detects vehicles ahead in the same lane as well as pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and provides timely warnings and braking assistance.

Nissan Frontier AEB system radar and camera sensor locations

In the Nissan Frontier, the AEB system relies on a forward-facing radar sensor located at the front of the vehicle B to measure the distance to vehicles ahead. For pedestrian detection, the system uses an additional camera mounted behind the windshield A, allowing enhanced recognition of people in the driving path.

AEB with Pedestrian Detection system operation

Nissan Frontier AEB system operation warning indicators and braking stages

    1. Vehicle ahead detection indicator
    2. AEB with Pedestrian Detection emergency warning indicator
    3. AEB with Pedestrian Detection system warning light

The Nissan Frontier AEB system activates at speeds above approximately 3 mph (5 km/h). The pedestrian detection function operates within a range of approximately 6 to 37 mph (10 to 60 km/h), providing additional safety in urban and residential driving conditions.

When the Nissan Frontier detects a potential frontal collision, the system initially alerts the driver through visual warnings (yellow indicator) and audible signals. If the driver responds by braking quickly but the system determines that a collision risk remains, the AEB system increases braking force automatically to assist in stopping the vehicle more effectively.

If no driver action is detected, the Nissan Frontier AEB system escalates the warning by issuing a second, more urgent alert (red and white flashing indicators along with a louder chime). If the accelerator pedal is released, the system will apply partial braking. Should the collision risk become imminent, stronger automatic braking is applied to reduce impact severity or potentially avoid the collision entirely.

During operation, you may hear braking-related sounds in your Nissan Frontier. This is normal and confirms that the AEB system is actively functioning.

    NOTE:

The brake lights of the Nissan Frontier will illuminate whenever braking is performed by the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system, ensuring that following drivers are alerted.

Depending on the speed of the Nissan Frontier, the distance to the vehicle or pedestrian ahead, and external conditions such as road surface and weather, the system may either help avoid a collision entirely or significantly reduce its severity.

If the driver is actively steering, accelerating, or braking, the Nissan Frontier AEB system may respond later or may not activate at all, as it prioritizes driver input.

Automatic braking intervention will be canceled under the following conditions:

    • When the driver turns the steering wheel to avoid the obstacle.
    • When the accelerator pedal is pressed.
    • When no vehicle or pedestrian is detected ahead.

If the Nissan Frontier AEB system brings the vehicle to a complete stop, it will hold the vehicle stationary for approximately 2 seconds before gradually releasing the brakes, allowing the driver to take over control.

Additional note: For optimal performance of the Nissan Frontier AEB system, always ensure that the front radar sensor and windshield camera area are clean and unobstructed, as dirt or debris can significantly reduce detection accuracy.

Turning the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system ON/OFF

Additional recommendation: Regularly inspect your Nissan Frontier 4WD system and use appropriate drive modes based on terrain to extend component life, improve efficiency, and maintain optimal performance.

Do not operate the 4WD selector switch of your Nissan Frontier while turning the steering wheel or when reversing, as this may cause improper engagement or drivetrain stress.

  • Avoid switching between 2WD and 4H while descending steep slopes. Instead, rely on engine braking and select lower automatic transmission gears (M1 or M2) to maintain safe control of your Nissan Frontier.
  • Never engage or change the 4WD mode while the rear wheels are spinning, as this can damage drivetrain components in your Nissan Frontier.
  • Driving your Nissan Frontier in 4H or 4LO on dry, paved roads is not recommended. Doing so may lead to excessive tire wear, increased noise, and unnecessary fuel consumption. Under such conditions, always use 2WD for optimal efficiency.
  • At low ambient temperatures, shifting between 4H and 4LO may be delayed, and the 4LO indicator may blink. After driving for a short period and warming up the drivetrain, the Nissan Frontier will allow proper shifting between these modes.

When operating your Nissan Frontier on rough or uneven terrain:

    • Select either 4H or 4LO depending on the severity of road conditions.
    • Drive cautiously and adapt your speed to match the terrain to maintain traction and control.

If your Nissan Frontier becomes stuck:

    • Switch to 4H or 4LO to maximize traction.
    • Place rocks, boards, or other firm materials under the tires to improve grip.
    • Utilize the Electronic Locking Rear Differential (E-Lock), if equipped, to enhance traction.
    • Gently rock the vehicle by alternating between forward and reverse gears.
    • If stuck deeply in mud or snow, reinforce traction with additional materials under the tires.

Repeat recovery techniques carefully. In some cases, tire chains may significantly improve traction and help free your Nissan Frontier.

    CAUTION

    • Avoid excessive wheel spin. Spinning tires may dig deeper into soft surfaces, making recovery more difficult.
    • Do not shift gears while the engine is running at high speeds, as this may result in mechanical damage or system malfunction.

The 4WD warning notification appears within the instrument cluster of your Nissan Frontier. It briefly illuminates when the ignition is turned ON and typically disappears shortly after the engine starts. However, if a malfunction occurs while driving, the warning message may remain continuously illuminated or begin flashing to alert the driver.

When this warning appears, the 4WD shift indicator will turn off, signaling that the system may no longer be operating correctly. Additionally, significant differences in tire diameter between the front and rear wheels can trigger the warning message to blink slowly (approximately once every two seconds), which may affect the performance of the Nissan Frontier 4WD system.

In such situations, switch the 4WD system back to 2WD mode and avoid driving at high speeds until the issue is resolved.

    CAUTION

    • If the warning message appears during driving or shortly after stopping your Nissan Frontier, have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Continued operation without inspection may worsen the issue.

Always consult an authorized NISSAN dealer to ensure proper repair and safe operation.

    • Avoid switching between 4H and 4LO when the 4WD warning message is active, as this may lead to further drivetrain complications in your Nissan Frontier.
    • If the warning message is displayed, the vehicle may automatically revert to 2WD mode even if the selector remains in 4H.

Exercise extreme caution, as the expected traction of the Nissan Frontier may not be available. In such cases, the 4WD system may fail to engage entirely due to internal faults.

    • Do not operate your Nissan Frontier in 4H or 4LO on dry, paved roads. Doing so may cause excessive tire wear, increased noise, and reduced fuel efficiency.

If a warning appears while driving on dry surfaces:

      • When in 4H, switch the system back to 2WD.
      • When in 4LO, bring the vehicle to a complete stop, shift the transmission to N (Neutral) while holding the brake pedal, and then switch to 2WD.
    • If the warning message persists after following these steps, have your Nissan Frontier checked immediately.

Professional inspection by a NISSAN dealer is highly recommended to avoid further damage.

    • Continuing to drive with an active 4WD warning message may result in serious damage to the transfer case and other drivetrain components of your Nissan Frontier.

Additional recommendation: Regularly inspect tire sizes and pressures on your Nissan Frontier, as mismatched tires can interfere with the proper operation of the 4WD system and may trigger warning messages.

Electronic locking rear differential (E-Lock) system

The electronic locking rear differential (E-Lock) system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to significantly improve traction in challenging driving conditions and should only be used when the vehicle is stuck or at risk of becoming immobilized. This advanced feature enhances off-road capability and is especially useful in mud, sand, or uneven terrain where standard traction may not be sufficient.

The system works by electronically locking both rear wheels together, forcing them to rotate at the same speed regardless of traction differences. This allows the Nissan Frontier to maintain forward momentum even when one wheel loses grip. It is particularly helpful in situations where the vehicle cannot be freed using the 4LO (4-Wheel Drive Low) mode alone, making it an essential tool for serious off-road driving.

When additional traction is required, activate the E-Lock system by pressing the dedicated switch to the ON position. For complete operational details, refer to "Electronic locking rear differential (E-Lock) system switch" in your Nissan Frontier manual. Once the system is fully engaged, an indicator light on the instrument panel will remain illuminated, confirming activation. At this point, both rear wheels will be mechanically linked, delivering maximum traction and stability.

During engagement, it is normal for the rear wheels to momentarily slip or shift slightly as the locking mechanism synchronizes. The E-Lock system will only engage at low speeds, typically up to approximately 4 mph (7 km/h). Once the Nissan Frontier is no longer stuck and normal traction is restored, the system must be turned off to resume regular driving conditions safely.

It is important to note that when the E-Lock system is activated, certain safety systems are temporarily disabled. The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) will be deactivated, and the ABS warning light will illuminate. Additionally, the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is also disabled, and the Nissan Frontier E-Lock system indicator light on instrument panel showing differential lock activation indicator light illuminates when the E-Lock system is on. This behavior is normal and ensures that the locking differential can operate without electronic interference.

    WARNING

    • Never leave the E-Lock system activated when driving on paved or hard surfaces in your Nissan Frontier. Doing so may cause the rear wheels to lose traction during turns, potentially resulting in loss of control, accidents, and serious personal injury. Always switch the system off immediately after freeing the vehicle.
    • Use the E-Lock system strictly for recovering a stuck vehicle. Always attempt to use the 4LO mode first before engaging the E-Lock system in your Nissan Frontier.

Never activate the E-Lock system on slippery road surfaces such as snow or ice. Using the system under these conditions may lead to unpredictable vehicle behavior during acceleration, deceleration, or turning, increasing the risk of accidents and severe injuries.

    • Carefully follow all warnings provided for the Nissan Frontier E-Lock system. Failure to do so may result in loss of steering control and stability, which can lead to dangerous driving situations.

    CAUTION

    • After using the E-Lock system in your Nissan Frontier, always switch it OFF promptly to avoid potential damage to drivetrain components caused by prolonged use.
    • Do not exceed speeds of 12 mph (20 km/h) while the E-Lock system is engaged. Driving at higher speeds may cause serious damage to the drivetrain.
    • Avoid activating the E-Lock system while the tires are spinning. This may result in mechanical stress and possible damage to the drivetrain components of your Nissan Frontier.

    Parking/parking on hills

Nissan Frontier correct wheel positioning when parking on hills with and without curb

    WARNING

    • Never park the Nissan Frontier over flammable materials such as dry grass, paper, or cloth. Hot exhaust components can ignite these materials and cause a fire hazard.
    • Proper parking procedures for the Nissan Frontier require both the parking brake to be firmly applied and the transmission shifted into the P (Park) position.

Failure to follow these steps may allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly or roll away, increasing the risk of accidents. Always ensure the shift lever is fully engaged in P and cannot be moved without pressing the brake pedal.

    • Never leave the engine of your Nissan Frontier running while the vehicle is unattended, even for a short period.
    • Do not leave children alone inside the Nissan Frontier. They may unintentionally operate switches or controls, potentially causing the vehicle to move or leading to dangerous situations.
    • To reduce the risk of injury or fatal incidents caused by unintended vehicle operation, never leave children, individuals requiring assistance, or pets unattended in the Nissan Frontier. Interior temperatures can rise rapidly, especially in warm weather, creating life-threatening conditions within minutes.

    1. Firmly engage the parking brake to secure the Nissan Frontier in place.

    2. Shift the transmission into the P (Park) position to prevent any unintended movement.

    3. When parking the Nissan Frontier on an incline, always turn the wheels appropriately to reduce the risk of rolling into traffic. Follow the recommended positioning shown in the illustration.

    • HEADED DOWNHILL WITH CURB A : Turn the front wheels toward the curb and slowly move the Nissan Frontier forward until the tire gently contacts the curb.
    • HEADED UPHILL WITH CURB B : Turn the wheels away from the curb and carefully reverse the Nissan Frontier until the rear tire lightly touches the curb.
    • HEADED UPHILL OR DOWNHILL, NO CURB C : Angle the wheels toward the side of the road so that if the Nissan Frontier begins to roll, it will move away from traffic instead of into it.

    4. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position to fully secure the vehicle.

    NOTE:

When the Nissan Frontier is stationary for short periods, such as at traffic lights, the Idling Stop System may temporarily shut off the engine to improve efficiency. However, when parking the vehicle for longer durations, always switch off the ignition completely to ensure safety and prevent unnecessary fuel consumption.

    Power steering

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with a power-assisted steering system that uses a hydraulic pump driven by the engine to reduce steering effort and enhance driving comfort.

If the engine stops running or if the drive belt fails, the steering system will continue to function mechanically, allowing the driver to maintain control of the Nissan Frontier.

However, significantly more force will be required to turn the steering wheel, especially during low-speed maneuvers or tight turns, which may affect handling if the driver is unprepared.

    WARNING

If the engine is turned off or stops while driving the Nissan Frontier, power steering assistance will no longer be available. Steering will become much heavier and require increased physical effort, which could lead to reduced control in critical situations.

    Brake system

    Basic Information

The brake system in the Nissan Frontier is engineered with dual independent hydraulic circuits to enhance safety and reliability. This design ensures that even if one circuit fails, the Nissan Frontier will still retain braking capability on two wheels, allowing the driver to maintain a level of control and safely bring the vehicle to a stop.

    Brake precautions

    Using the brakes

While driving the Nissan Frontier, avoid keeping your foot resting on the brake pedal. This habit can cause excessive heat buildup in the braking system, accelerate brake pad wear, and negatively impact fuel efficiency. Proper brake usage not only extends component life but also ensures consistent braking performance.

To minimize brake wear and prevent overheating, especially in the Nissan Frontier when traveling downhill or on long descents, reduce speed in advance and shift into a lower gear. Engine braking helps relieve stress on the brake system. Overheated brakes can significantly reduce stopping power and may lead to dangerous loss of vehicle control.

    WARNING

    • When driving the Nissan Frontier on slippery surfaces such as wet roads, ice, or loose gravel, exercise caution when braking, accelerating, or downshifting. Sudden inputs may cause the wheels to lose traction, potentially resulting in skidding and accidents.
    • If the engine is not running or is switched off while driving the Nissan Frontier, the brake booster will not function.

This will require significantly greater force on the brake pedal to slow or stop the vehicle.

    Wet brakes

After washing the Nissan Frontier or driving through water, the brake components may become wet. This can temporarily reduce braking efficiency, increase stopping distance, and may cause the vehicle to pull slightly to one side during braking.

To restore proper braking performance, drive at a safe speed and apply the brakes gently several times to generate heat and dry the components. Continue this process until normal braking response returns. Avoid high-speed driving until the braking system in your Nissan Frontier is fully effective again.

    Parking brake break-in

For optimal performance of the parking brake in the Nissan Frontier, a break-in procedure may be required if braking effectiveness decreases or after replacing brake shoes, drums, or rotors. Proper break-in ensures maximum holding force and long-term reliability.

This procedure is outlined in the official service manual. For best results and safety, it is recommended to have this service performed by an authorized Nissan dealer familiar with the Nissan Frontier braking system.

    Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

    Basic Information

    WARNING

    • The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the Nissan Frontier is an advanced safety feature designed to help maintain steering control during hard braking, particularly on slippery surfaces. However, it cannot compensate for unsafe driving behavior. Stopping distances may still be longer on wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads, and when using tire chains. Always keep a safe following distance and drive responsibly.
    • The condition and type of tires installed on the Nissan Frontier play a crucial role in braking performance.
      • Always install tires of the specified size and type on all four wheels to maintain proper balance and braking efficiency.
      • When using a spare tire, ensure it matches the specifications listed on the Tire and Loading Information label for the Nissan Frontier.

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the Nissan Frontier is designed to actively regulate braking force and prevent the wheels from locking during sudden or emergency braking situations, as well as when driving on slippery or uneven road surfaces. By continuously monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel, the system intelligently adjusts brake fluid pressure to ensure optimal grip and stability at all times.

By preventing wheel lock-up, the ABS system in the Nissan Frontier helps the driver retain full steering control even under heavy braking. This greatly reduces the risk of skidding, loss of control, or spinning, especially on wet, icy, or loose road conditions, enhancing overall driving safety and confidence.

    Using the system

Press the brake pedal firmly and maintain consistent pressure when braking the Nissan Frontier.

Apply steady and continuous force to the brake pedal without pumping it. The ABS system will automatically modulate braking pressure to prevent wheel lock-up. While braking, continue steering the Nissan Frontier as needed to safely avoid obstacles and maintain your intended path.

    WARNING

Do not pump the brake pedal in the Nissan Frontier. Pumping can interfere with ABS operation and may increase stopping distance, reducing braking effectiveness in critical situations.

    Self-test feature

The Nissan Frontier ABS system consists of advanced components including electronic sensors, hydraulic valves, an electric pump, and an onboard control module. This system performs an automatic self-diagnostic check every time the engine is started and the vehicle begins moving at low speed, whether forward or in reverse.

During this self-test, you may hear a brief mechanical sound such as a "clunk" or feel a slight pulsation through the brake pedal. This is a normal function of the Nissan Frontier ABS system and confirms that all components are operating correctly.

If the system detects a malfunction, it will automatically deactivate ABS functionality and illuminate the ABS warning light on the instrument panel. In this case, the standard braking system will continue to operate, but without anti-lock assistance.

If the ABS warning light remains on after the self-test or comes on while driving the Nissan Frontier, the system should be inspected as soon as possible. It is strongly recommended to have the vehicle checked by an authorized Nissan dealer to ensure proper safety and performance.

    Normal operation

The ABS system in the Nissan Frontier becomes active at speeds above approximately 3 - 6 mph (5 - 10 km/h), depending on road conditions and traction levels.

When the system detects that one or more wheels are approaching a lock-up condition, it rapidly adjusts brake pressure through the actuator. This process happens many times per second and mimics rapid brake application far faster than a driver could achieve manually.

As a result, you may feel pulsations in the brake pedal, hear mechanical noises from under the hood, or notice slight vibrations through the vehicle. These sensations are completely normal and indicate that the ABS system in the Nissan Frontier is functioning correctly. However, such feedback also serves as a reminder that road conditions may be hazardous, and additional caution should be exercised while driving.

Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) system

    • The Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to enhance traction by automatically applying brake force to a slipping wheel and transferring power to the wheel on the same axle with better grip. This intelligent braking intervention helps the Nissan Frontier maintain forward motion on uneven, loose, or slippery surfaces where traction is compromised.
    • On Nissan Frontier models equipped with 4-Wheel Drive, the ABLS system functions in both 4H and 4LO modes.

When 4WD is engaged, the ABLS system actively manages traction across both front and rear axles, improving off-road capability and stability. In contrast, on 2-Wheel Drive Nissan Frontier models, the system operates only on the drive axle, ensuring efficient power distribution where it is needed most.

    • The ABLS system in the Nissan Frontier is continuously active and requires no driver input. However, under certain operating conditions, the system may temporarily deactivate automatically to protect components. Even in such cases, normal braking performance remains unaffected. Additionally, the ABLS system continues to function independently even when the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is switched off.
    • The ABLS system will not engage if both wheels on the same drive axle lose traction simultaneously, as there is no stable wheel available to transfer torque to.

    WARNING

    • While the ABLS system in the Nissan Frontier improves traction, it cannot eliminate the risk of accidents caused by sudden steering inputs, excessive speed, or unsafe driving behavior. Always reduce speed and exercise extra caution when driving on slippery or unstable surfaces, especially when cornering.
    • Do not modify the suspension system of your Nissan Frontier.

If components such as shock absorbers, springs, struts, stabilizer bars, bushings, or wheels are not approved by Nissan or are excessively worn, the ABLS system may not function correctly.

This may negatively impact handling performance and could trigger the slip indicator warning light.

    • If brake components such as pads, rotors, or calipers are not Nissan-approved or are significantly worn, the ABLS system in the Nissan Frontier may operate improperly, and the slip indicator light may illuminate.
    • Using non-recommended wheels or tires on the Nissan Frontier can interfere with proper ABLS operation and may also cause the slip indicator warning light to turn on.

    Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system

    Basic Information

The Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system in the Nissan Frontier is an advanced stability control feature that continuously monitors driver inputs and vehicle behavior using a network of sensors. These sensors track parameters such as steering angle, wheel speed, and vehicle motion to help ensure optimal control and stability in a wide range of driving conditions.

Under specific driving situations, the Nissan Frontier VDC system actively supports the driver by performing several key functions designed to enhance traction, handling, and overall vehicle stability:

    • It automatically adjusts brake pressure on individual wheels to reduce slip on a spinning wheel, allowing engine power to be redirected to the wheel with better traction on the same axle.
    • It regulates both braking force and engine output to minimize wheel spin depending on vehicle speed, effectively acting as a traction control system in the Nissan Frontier.
    • If the 4WD transfer case is shifted into 4LO mode, the Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator light when 4LO mode is engaged indicator light will come on and the VDC system will be turned off, as this mode is intended for low-speed off-road conditions where maximum traction is required.
    • The system also independently controls brake pressure at each wheel and adjusts engine output to help the driver maintain control of the Nissan Frontier in challenging conditions such as:
      • Understeer, when the vehicle does not follow the intended steering direction despite increased steering input.
      • Oversteer, when the rear of the vehicle begins to slide or rotate due to road conditions or excessive speed.

The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to assist the driver in maintaining stability and control, but it cannot eliminate the risk of losing control in all situations. Safe driving practices remain essential at all times.

When the VDC system is actively intervening, the Nissan Frontier VDC system active indicator flashing on instrument cluster indicator light in the instrument panel flashes. When this occurs, consider the following:

    • The road surface may be slippery, or the system is actively correcting vehicle motion to keep the Nissan Frontier on the intended path.
    • You may notice pulsation in the brake pedal or hear mechanical noise or vibration from the engine compartment. These are normal signs that the VDC system is functioning correctly.
    • Adjust your driving speed and style according to current road conditions to maintain safe control of the Nissan Frontier.

If a malfunction is detected within the system, the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light indicating system malfunction indicator light will come on in the instrument panel. In this case, the VDC system will automatically deactivate.

The VDC OFF switch allows the driver to manually disable the VDC system. When switched off, the Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator with RAB and AEB warning lights illuminated indicator light, RAB warning light, and the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system warning light illuminate, indicating that these systems are deactivated.

Even when the VDC OFF switch is used, the Nissan Frontier still retains a limited traction function. The system can continue to reduce wheel slip by applying braking force to a spinning wheel and transferring torque to the opposite wheel. In such cases, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator flashing during traction control intervention indicator light flashes if this occurs. All other VDC-related stability functions remain disabled, and the Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator steady light indicator light will not flash.

The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier automatically resets and reactivates when the ignition is turned OFF and then back to the ON position, ensuring the system is ready for normal operation.

Additionally, the onboard control module includes a self-diagnostic function that checks system performance each time the engine is started and the vehicle begins moving slowly in either direction. During this test, you may hear a brief "clunk" sound or feel a slight vibration in the brake pedal. This is a normal indication that the Nissan Frontier VDC system is operating correctly.

    WARNING

    • The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to assist in maintaining vehicle stability but cannot prevent accidents caused by aggressive steering, excessive speed, or unsafe driving practices. Always reduce speed and exercise caution, especially when driving on slippery or uneven surfaces.
    • Do not modify the suspension system of your Nissan Frontier.

If suspension components such as shock absorbers, springs, struts, stabilizer bars, bushings, or wheels are not Nissan-approved or are severely worn, the VDC system may not function properly. This can negatively affect handling performance and may cause the Nissan Frontier slip indicator warning light indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light illuminated indicator light may illuminate.

    • If brake components such as pads, rotors, or calipers are not Nissan-approved or are excessively worn, the VDC system in the Nissan Frontier may malfunction, and both the Nissan Frontier brake system warning indicatorand Nissan Frontier VDC system warning indicator indicator lights may illuminate.
    • If engine-related control components are not Nissan-approved or are heavily deteriorated, both the Nissan Frontier engine system warning light and Nissan Frontier VDC malfunction indicator indicator lights may illuminate.
    • When driving on steeply banked roads or extreme inclines, the Nissan Frontier VDC system may not operate correctly, and the Nissan Frontier slip indicator flashing on steep incline indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier warning indicator illuminated on incline indicator light may illuminate. Avoid driving under such conditions.
    • When operating the Nissan Frontier on unstable surfaces such as turntables, ferries, elevators, or ramps, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator on unstable surface indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier system warning light on unstable platform indicator light may illuminate. This is normal behavior and does not indicate a malfunction.

After operating the Nissan Frontier on unstable or moving surfaces, always restart the engine once the vehicle is back on solid ground. This allows the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system to reset and resume normal operation, ensuring optimal stability and safety.

  • If wheels or tires that are not approved or recommended by Nissan are installed on the Nissan Frontier, the VDC system may not function correctly. In such cases, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator warning light flashing due to tire mismatch indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light illuminated due to improper tires indicator light may illuminate, signaling reduced system performance.
  • The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to assist with stability, but it cannot replace proper winter driving equipment. Always use appropriate winter tires or tire chains when driving on snow-covered or icy roads to ensure maximum traction and safety.

    Brake force distribution

When braking the Nissan Frontier while cornering, the system intelligently adjusts and distributes braking force to each of the four wheels. This optimization is based on the turning radius and vehicle dynamics, helping maintain stability, reduce body roll, and improve control during curved braking situations.

    WARNING

    • The Vehicle Dynamic Control system in the Nissan Frontier is engineered to assist the driver in maintaining stability, but it cannot prevent accidents caused by sudden steering inputs, excessive speed, or unsafe driving behavior. Always reduce speed and drive with increased caution, especially on slippery or uneven road surfaces.
    • Do not modify the suspension system of your Nissan Frontier.

If suspension components such as shock absorbers, struts, springs, stabilizer bars, bushings, or wheels are not Nissan-approved or are significantly worn, the VDC system may not operate properly. This can negatively affect handling performance and may cause the Nissan Frontier slip indicator warning light flashing due to suspension issues indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light illuminated due to suspension fault indicator light may illuminate.

    • If brake system components such as pads, rotors, or calipers are not Nissan-approved or are excessively worn, the VDC system in the Nissan Frontier may not function correctly. In this case, both the Nissan Frontier brake warning indicator and Nissan Frontier VDC system warning indicator indicator lights may illuminate.
    • If engine control components are not Nissan-approved or are heavily deteriorated, both the Nissan Frontier engine warning light and Nissan Frontier VDC malfunction indicator indicator lights may illuminate, indicating possible system malfunction.
    • When driving the Nissan Frontier on extremely steep or highly banked surfaces, such as sharp inclines or angled corners, the VDC system may not operate as intended. In such cases, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator flashing on steep incline indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier warning light illuminated on incline indicator light may illuminate. Avoid driving under these extreme conditions whenever possible.
    • When operating the Nissan Frontier on unstable platforms such as ferries, elevators, ramps, or rotating surfaces, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator on unstable surface indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier system warning light on unstable platform indicator light may illuminate. This is normal behavior and does not indicate a malfunction.

Once the Nissan Frontier returns to a stable driving surface, restart the engine to reset the system and restore full functionality.

    • If wheels or tires that are not Nissan-approved are used on the Nissan Frontier, the VDC system may not function properly. In such cases, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator warning light due to incorrect tires indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light due to tire mismatch indicator light may illuminate.
    • The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier is not a replacement for proper winter driving equipment. Always equip the vehicle with suitable winter tires or chains when driving in snow or icy conditions to maintain safe handling and braking performance.

    Hill descent control system

    WARNING

    • Never depend entirely on the hill descent control system of the Nissan Frontier to regulate vehicle speed when driving down steep slopes. Always remain attentive and maintain full control of the vehicle. If necessary, reduce speed manually by applying the brake pedal. Extra caution is required when driving on icy, muddy, or extremely steep terrain, as failure to properly control speed may result in loss of control, serious injury, or even fatal consequences.
    • The hill descent control system in the Nissan Frontier may not maintain a consistent speed under all driving conditions or vehicle loads. Always be ready to apply the brakes manually. Ignoring this precaution could lead to collisions or severe personal injury.

The hill descent control system in the Nissan Frontier is specifically designed to assist the driver when descending steep inclines at speeds below approximately 15–21 mph (25–35 km/h). This system is particularly useful in off-road situations where engine braking alone, even in 4H or 4LO mode, is insufficient to safely control the vehicle’s speed.

By automatically applying the brakes, the Nissan Frontier hill descent control system maintains a steady and controlled descent. This allows the driver to focus on steering and navigating obstacles while reducing the need for constant brake or accelerator input, improving overall driving confidence on challenging terrain.

    - When additional braking assistance is needed on steep downhill surfaces, activate the hill descent control system by pressing the designated switch in the Nissan Frontier.

If either the accelerator or brake pedal is pressed while the hill descent control system is active, the system will temporarily disengage. Once the pedals are released, the system will automatically resume operation, provided that all required conditions are met.

For optimal performance when descending steep grades in the Nissan Frontier, ensure that the hill descent control system is activated and select a lower gear such as 2 (Second gear) or 1 (Low gear). This combination enhances engine braking and improves vehicle stability.

    Hill start assist system

    WARNING

    • Do not rely solely on the hill start assist system in the Nissan Frontier to prevent rollback when starting on an incline. Always remain alert and keep your foot on the brake pedal when necessary.

Particular care should be taken on steep, icy, or muddy slopes. Failure to properly control the vehicle may result in unintended backward movement, increasing the risk of accidents and serious injury.

    • The hill start assist system is not intended to hold the Nissan Frontier stationary for extended periods on a hill. Always keep the brake pedal engaged when stopped on an incline. Failure to do so may allow the vehicle to roll backward and cause a collision.
    • The effectiveness of the hill start assist system may vary depending on load and road conditions.

Always be prepared to apply the brakes manually to prevent rollback. Neglecting this may result in loss of control or serious personal injury.

When the Nissan Frontier is stopped on an incline, the hill start assist system automatically maintains brake pressure for a short period. This provides the driver with enough time to transition from the brake pedal to the accelerator without the vehicle rolling backward.

The hill start assist system in the Nissan Frontier operates automatically when the following conditions are met:

    • The shift lever is engaged in either a forward or reverse gear.
    • The vehicle is completely stationary on an incline while the brake pedal is pressed.

The system holds the vehicle in place for up to approximately 2 seconds.

After this period, the Nissan Frontier may begin to roll if the accelerator is not applied, and the hill start assist function will disengage.

The hill start assist system will not activate if the transmission is in N (Neutral) or P (Park), or when the vehicle is positioned on a flat surface.

    Rear Sonar System (RSS)

    Basic Information

Nissan Frontier rear sonar system sensors location and detection zones illustration

The Rear Sonar System (RSS) in the Nissan Frontier is designed to assist the driver by emitting audible alerts when obstacles are detected near the rear bumper. This feature enhances parking safety by providing real-time feedback about nearby objects, helping reduce the risk of accidental contact.

When the "DISPLAY" key is activated in the Nissan Frontier, a sonar visualization automatically appears on the touchscreen, providing a clear graphical representation of detected obstacles. In addition, a supplementary sonar status view is shown in the vehicle information display, giving the driver enhanced situational awareness during parking and low-speed maneuvers.

    WARNING

    • The RSS in the Nissan Frontier is intended as a driver assistance feature only and must not be relied upon as a replacement for careful and attentive parking.
    • The driver remains fully responsible for ensuring safety when parking or maneuvering the Nissan Frontier.

Always visually check surroundings and confirm that it is safe before proceeding.

    • It is essential to understand the operational limits of the Nissan Frontier RSS system.

The color-coded sonar indicators and distance guide lines displayed in the rear view correspond to different distances from detected objects and should be interpreted carefully.

    • Environmental conditions such as heavy rain, snow, or interference from ultrasonic sources like automatic car washes, compressed-air brakes, or construction equipment may affect system performance, potentially causing reduced accuracy or false alerts.
    • This system is specifically designed to help detect larger stationary objects and minimize the risk of damage to the Nissan Frontier during parking.
    • The RSS system may not detect smaller or moving objects. Always drive slowly and remain cautious. Objects located very close to the bumper, below it, or on the ground may not be detected.
    • The system may have difficulty detecting certain materials or shapes, including soft objects like snow or cloth, transparent objects such as glass, thin items like wires or ropes, and irregular or wedge-shaped obstacles.

If the rear bumper of the Nissan Frontier is damaged, misaligned, or deformed, the sonar detection area may be affected. This can lead to inaccurate distance measurements or false warnings, reducing the effectiveness of the RSS system.

    CAUTION

    • Loud ambient noise, such as high audio volume or open windows, may interfere with your ability to hear the RSS warning tones in the Nissan Frontier.
    • Ensure that the sonar sensors located on the Nissan Frontier bumper remain clean and unobstructed.

Avoid using sharp tools when cleaning the sensors. Accumulated dirt, snow, or ice can reduce system accuracy and detection capability.

    System operation

The Nissan Frontier RSS provides both visual and audible alerts when obstacles are detected behind the vehicle while the shift lever is in the R (Reverse) position.

The system automatically deactivates when the Nissan Frontier exceeds speeds of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) and reactivates when the vehicle slows down below this threshold.

If an obstacle is detected only by a corner sensor and its distance remains unchanged, the intermittent warning tone will stop after approximately 3 seconds. The tone will also stop once the obstacle moves away from the vehicle.

When an object is initially detected, a green indicator appears and blinks while an intermittent tone sounds. As the Nissan Frontier approaches the object, the indicator changes to yellow and the blinking frequency increases. When the vehicle is very close to the object, the indicator turns red and remains steady, accompanied by a continuous warning tone.
