Basic Information
1. Engage the parking brake firmly to secure your Nissan Frontier before starting.
2. Move the shift lever into the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position.
For safety and reliability, P (Park) is strongly recommended when starting the Nissan Frontier. The starter system is designed to function only when the transmission is in P (Park) or N (Neutral).
3. Press the ignition switch to place the system in the ON position.
Depress the brake pedal and then push the ignition switch to start the engine of your Nissan Frontier.
For immediate engine start, press and release the ignition switch while holding the brake pedal, regardless of the current ignition mode.
Press the ignition switch to the ON position to crank the engine. After 5–6 seconds, stop cranking by returning the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Release the accelerator pedal, then attempt to start the engine again by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the ignition switch. If the Nissan Frontier engine starts but stalls, repeat the process carefully.
CAUTION
Do not operate the starter motor for more than 15 seconds at a time. If the Nissan Frontier engine does not start, switch the ignition to OFF and wait at least 10 seconds before trying again. Failure to follow this procedure may cause damage to the starter system.
4. Warm-up
After starting the Nissan Frontier, allow the engine to idle for at least 30 seconds. Avoid revving the engine immediately after startup.
Drive at moderate speeds for the first few minutes, especially in cold weather conditions, to allow proper lubrication and temperature stabilization.
In colder climates, it is recommended to let the engine run for 2–3 minutes before shutting it off again. Frequent short starts and stops may negatively affect starting performance and battery condition in your Nissan Frontier.
5. To stop the engine, shift the transmission into the P (Park) position and press the ignition switch to turn it OFF.
Depending on driving conditions, the Nissan Frontier engine may not shut off instantly after switching to OFF. A slight delay is normal and part of system operation.
NOTE:
The engine of the Nissan Frontier cannot be restarted within approximately 3 seconds after it has been turned off. This is a normal system protection feature.
NOTE:
To prevent battery discharge and potential starting issues in your Nissan Frontier, avoid the following situations:
1. Prolonged use or installation of electrical accessories (such as phone chargers, GPS units, or media devices) while the engine is off.
2. Infrequent vehicle use or repeated short-distance driving without sufficient engine run time.
Under these conditions, the battery may require periodic charging to maintain optimal performance and longevity.
Remote Engine Start
When your Nissan Frontier is started using the Remote Engine Start feature, the ignition system must be switched to the ON position before the transmission can be shifted out of P (Park).
To switch the ignition to ON, follow these steps:
1. Ensure that the Intelligent Key is inside the Nissan Frontier or on your person.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Push the ignition switch once to place the system in the ON position.
Following these steps ensures that your Nissan Frontier is fully ready for safe driving operation after remote start.
