Nissan Frontier: Cold weather driving

Freeing a frozen door lock

To prevent door locks on your Nissan Frontier from freezing during cold weather, it is recommended to apply a suitable de-icing solution directly into the keyhole. If the lock is already frozen, gently warm the key before inserting it or use the remote keyless entry system (if equipped) to unlock the vehicle without forcing the mechanism.

Antifreeze

During winter months, especially when temperatures are expected to drop below 32ºF (0ºC), it is essential to check the antifreeze level and concentration in your Nissan Frontier. Proper antifreeze protection ensures that the engine cooling system remains operational and prevents freezing or internal damage.

Battery

Cold temperatures can significantly affect battery performance in the Nissan Frontier. If the battery is not fully charged, the electrolyte may freeze, potentially causing permanent damage. Regular inspection and maintenance of the battery will help ensure reliable starting and optimal efficiency in extreme weather conditions.

Draining of coolant water

If the Nissan Frontier is to be parked outdoors without antifreeze in freezing temperatures, the entire cooling system, including the engine block, should be drained. Always refill the system with the proper coolant mixture before operating the vehicle again to avoid severe engine damage.

Tire equipment

1. SUMMER tires are engineered for optimal performance on dry roads, but their effectiveness is greatly reduced in snow and ice. When driving a Nissan Frontier in winter conditions, it is strongly recommended to install MUD & SNOW or ALL-SEASON tires on all four wheels for improved traction and stability. Consult a Nissan dealer for correct specifications.

2. Studded tires may be used for additional grip on icy roads, depending on local regulations. Always verify legal restrictions before installing them. Keep in mind that studded tires may offer reduced performance on wet or dry pavement compared to non-studded winter tires.

Skid and traction performance of studded snow tires on non-icy surfaces may be inferior compared to standard winter tires.

3. Tire chains can also be used to enhance traction in severe winter conditions when driving the Nissan Frontier.

Special winter equipment

For safe winter driving in the Nissan Frontier, it is advisable to carry essential equipment in the vehicle:

  • An ice scraper and a stiff brush for clearing snow and frost from windows and wiper blades.
  • A strong, flat board to provide stable support for a jack on snow or soft ground.
  • A shovel to help free the Nissan Frontier if it becomes stuck in deep snow.
  • Extra windshield washer fluid suitable for low temperatures.

Driving on snow or ice

WARNING

  • Driving on wet ice, freezing rain, or extremely cold snow significantly reduces traction. The Nissan Frontier may lose grip easily under these conditions. Avoid driving on untreated icy roads whenever possible.
  • Always accelerate, decelerate, and shift gears smoothly. Sudden inputs may cause the drive wheels to lose traction and lead to skidding.
  • Increase stopping distances and begin braking earlier than usual when driving on snow or ice.
  • Maintain a greater following distance from other vehicles to allow adequate reaction time.
  • Be alert for hidden ice patches, especially in shaded areas.

If ice is visible ahead, slow down before reaching it. Avoid braking or steering abruptly while driving over icy surfaces.

  • Do not use cruise control when driving the Nissan Frontier on slippery roads.
  • Ensure that snow does not accumulate around the exhaust pipe, as this may trap dangerous exhaust gases beneath the vehicle.

Engine block heater

The engine block heater in the Nissan Frontier is designed to assist with starting the engine in extremely cold conditions by warming the engine coolant in advance.

It is recommended to use the engine block heater when outside temperatures fall below 20ºF (-7ºC) to improve engine performance and reduce wear during cold starts.

WARNING

  • Never use the engine block heater of the Nissan Frontier with an ungrounded electrical outlet or a 2-pronged adapter. This may result in serious electrical shock.
  • Always disconnect and properly store the heater cord before starting the engine to prevent damage and potential injury.
  • Use a heavy-duty 3-wire, 3-pronged extension cord rated for at least 10 amps.

Ensure the cord is connected to a Ground Fault Interrupt (GFI) protected 110-volt AC outlet.

Failure to follow these precautions may lead to fire hazards or electric shock.

To properly use the engine block heater in the Nissan Frontier:

1. Turn the engine off completely.

2. Open the hood and locate the engine block heater cord.

3. Connect the heater cord to a grounded extension cord.

4. Plug the extension cord into a GFI-protected 110-volt AC outlet.

5. Allow the heater to operate for 2–4 hours, depending on ambient temperature, to adequately warm the engine coolant.

6. Before starting the Nissan Frontier, disconnect the cord and store it securely away from moving parts.

CAUTION

Using the engine block heater while the Nissan Frontier is parked at a steep angle (front higher than rear by 5 degrees or more) may cause damage to the heater and affect its operation.
