Nissan Frontier: Idling Stop System

Basic Information

The Idling Stop System in the Nissan Frontier is an intelligent fuel-saving technology designed to automatically reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and engine noise during stops. This system enhances efficiency, especially in urban driving conditions where frequent stops occur.

  • When the Nissan Frontier comes to a complete stop, the engine is automatically switched off to conserve fuel and minimize emissions.
  • As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal to continue driving, the engine automatically restarts, allowing seamless and uninterrupted operation.

WARNING

If the Nissan Frontier begins to move at approximately 1 mph (2 km/h) or more—such as on a downhill slope—while the engine is temporarily stopped by the Idling Stop System, the engine will automatically restart. Immediately press the brake pedal to maintain control of the vehicle and prevent potential accidents.

CAUTION

  • At the end of your trip, always turn off the engine of the Nissan Frontier completely by switching the ignition to the OFF position and locking the vehicle as usual. This action ensures that all electrical systems are properly shut down.

Failure to do so may result in battery discharge and reduced vehicle reliability.

  • Before opening the hood or performing any maintenance on the Nissan Frontier, always place the ignition switch in the OFF position. The engine may restart automatically if the system is active, which could lead to serious injury.

NOTE:

The Idling Stop System in the Nissan Frontier may not activate under certain operating conditions. These include, but are not limited to, the following situations:

  • When the Nissan Frontier is operating in TOW mode.
  • When the 4LO mode is engaged. (The system will reactivate after approximately 4 hours following ignition OFF. It will also reset after battery reconnection.)
  • When specific terrain modes such as ROCK, MUD, or SAND are selected via the Terrain Mode Selector (if equipped).
  • When the engine continues to idle without the vehicle being driven after startup.
  • When engine coolant temperature is below optimal operating range.
  • When battery charge level or battery temperature is low.
  • When the Nissan Frontier is in motion.
  • When brake booster vacuum pressure is insufficient.
  • When the hood is open while the engine is running or started.
  • When the driver's seat belt is not fastened.
  • When the driver's door is open.
  • When the steering wheel is actively turned or has been rotated significantly (approximately 45 degrees or more) while stopped.
  • When the Idling Stop System indicator flashes:

    - If it flashes rapidly (about twice per second), check whether the hood is open. In this case, the engine will remain in a normal stopped state and should be restarted manually using the ignition switch.

    - If it flashes slowly (about once every 2 seconds), the Nissan Frontier should be inspected by an authorized Nissan dealer as soon as possible, as this may indicate a system malfunction.

  • When the climate control system is actively using the front defroster or when fan speed is not set to OFF.
  • When the front or rear window defroster is activated.
  • When the interior temperature of the Nissan Frontier is below approximately 68°F (20°C) or above approximately 86°F (30°C). (If the air conditioning is turned off, the system may still operate.)
  • When the air conditioning fan is set to maximum speed.
  • When the Idling Stop OFF switch is activated.
  • When electrical power demand is high.
  • When driving at high altitudes.
  • When the accelerator pedal is pressed.
  • When the transmission is not in D (Drive).
  • When the brake pedal is not firmly depressed.
  • When the Nissan Frontier is stopped on a steep incline or decline.

NOTE:

In the Nissan Frontier, the engine will not automatically restart—even if the brake pedal is released—while the Idling Stop System is active under the following condition:

  • When the engine hood is open, as a safety precaution to prevent unintended engine operation.

NOTE:

The activation of the Idling Stop System in the Nissan Frontier may be delayed under certain conditions, including:

  • When the vehicle battery is partially discharged or not fully charged.
  • When ambient temperatures are extremely low or high, affecting system efficiency.
  • After the battery has been replaced or disconnected for an extended period and then reconnected, as the system requires recalibration.

NOTE:

When the Idling Stop System indicator illuminates in the Nissan Frontier, the engine may automatically restart if one or more of the following conditions occur:

  • The driver's seat belt is unfastened or the driver's door is opened.
  • The battery voltage drops due to increased electrical load from systems such as headlights, climate control, or devices connected to the 12V outlet.
  • The vehicle begins moving at a speed greater than approximately 1 mph (2 km/h).
  • The rear window defroster is activated.
  • The interior temperature of the Nissan Frontier falls below approximately 68°F (20°C).
  • The interior temperature exceeds approximately 86°F (30°C). (If the air conditioning is turned off, the system may still function.)
  • The front defroster is turned on.
  • More than approximately 3 minutes have passed since the Idling Stop System was engaged.
  • The accelerator pedal is pressed.
  • The steering wheel is turned or adjusted.

(Steering effort may temporarily increase during this time, which is normal and not a malfunction in the Nissan Frontier.)

  • The battery capacity is low.
  • Electrical power demand is high.
  • The Nissan Frontier is operating in TOW or 4LO mode.
  • Terrain modes such as ROCK, MUD, or SAND are selected (if equipped).
  • The shift lever is not in the D (Drive) position.
  • The Idling Stop OFF switch has been activated.

NOTE:

The following condition will prevent the Nissan Frontier Idling Stop System from automatically restarting the engine. In this case, manual engine start using the ignition switch is required:

  • The engine hood is open.

Use the Idling Stop System in the Nissan Frontier primarily during short stops, such as at traffic lights, to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. However, if the vehicle is expected to remain stationary for an extended period, it is recommended to switch off the engine completely for optimal performance and battery preservation.

When the engine is stopped by the Idling Stop System, climate control functions such as heating, cooling, and dehumidification may be temporarily suspended. To maintain continuous cabin comfort in the Nissan Frontier, you can disable the system using the Idling Stop OFF switch when necessary.
