Type B (if so equipped)

  1. Two Intelligent Keys
  2. Mechanical key
  3. Master key
  4. Key number plate

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with the advanced Intelligent Key system, which allows secure and convenient vehicle access and operation without the need for traditional key insertion.

Your Nissan Frontier can only be operated using Intelligent Keys that are properly registered to its Intelligent Key system and the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System. These systems work together to provide enhanced theft protection and ensure that only authorized keys can start the vehicle.

Never leave these keys inside the Nissan Frontier.

Up to four Intelligent Keys can be registered to a single Nissan Frontier. When adding new keys, all existing keys must be presented to a NISSAN dealer, as the system will erase previously stored data during registration and reprogram all keys simultaneously.

A key number plate is included with your Nissan Frontier keys. Record this number and store it in a safe place, such as your wallet — never inside the vehicle. This number is essential if all keys are lost and replacements are required.

NISSAN does not retain records of key numbers, so it is critical to keep your key number plate secure and accessible.

If at least one key remains available, duplication can be performed without the key number. However, if all keys are lost, the key number becomes necessary to create replacements.

CAUTION

The following conditions may damage the Intelligent Key used with your Nissan Frontier:

  • Avoid exposing the Intelligent Key to water or saltwater, as moisture can damage internal electronic components.
  • Do not drop the Intelligent Key or subject it to strong impacts.
  • Do not strike the key against hard surfaces.
  • Do not attempt to modify or alter the Intelligent Key.
  • If the Intelligent Key becomes wet, dry it immediately and thoroughly.
  • Do not leave the Intelligent Key in areas exceeding 140ºF (60ºC), such as inside a parked vehicle in hot weather.
  • Avoid attaching the Intelligent Key to magnetic key holders.
  • Keep the Intelligent Key away from strong electromagnetic sources such as televisions, audio systems, or personal computers.

If an Intelligent Key for your Nissan Frontier is lost or stolen, it is strongly recommended to have its ID erased from the vehicle system by a NISSAN dealer to prevent unauthorized use.

Nissan Frontier mechanical key removal from Intelligent Key housing

Mechanical key

The Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key also includes a built-in mechanical key for emergency use.

To remove the mechanical key, release the lock knob located on the back of the Intelligent Key.

To reinstall it, insert the key fully until the lock mechanism clicks securely into place.

The mechanical key can be used to manually lock or unlock the driver’s door, tailgate, and glove box (if equipped) in situations where electronic access is unavailable.

CAUTION

Always ensure that the mechanical key is properly secured inside the Intelligent Key housing when not in use.

Valet hand-off (if so equipped)

When handing over your Nissan Frontier to a valet, it is important to protect your personal belongings by limiting access to certain compartments.

Provide the valet with the Intelligent Key only, while retaining the mechanical key and master key for yourself.

To secure the glove box during valet service, follow these steps:

1. Remove the mechanical key from the Intelligent Key.

2. Lock the glove box using the mechanical key or master key.

3. Hand over only the Intelligent Key to the valet and keep the remaining keys with you.

NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System keys

Additional or replacement keys for the Nissan Frontier Immobilizer System can be obtained as follows:

If you still have an existing key, duplication is possible without the key number. However, all keys must be presented to a NISSAN dealer for proper registration.

The Nissan Frontier Immobilizer System supports up to four keys. During registration, all previously stored key codes are erased, and only the keys present during the process will remain valid.

Any virtual key accessories (if equipped) must also be re-registered during this process.

Any key not included during registration will no longer be able to start your Nissan Frontier.

CAUTION

Do not expose immobilizer system keys to water or saltwater. The embedded transponder is sensitive to moisture and may fail if damaged.

Proper care and handling of your Nissan Frontier keys will ensure long-term reliability, security, and seamless vehicle operation.

Doors

Basic information

In the Nissan Frontier, once the doors are secured using any of the available locking methods, they cannot be opened from either the inside or outside door handles. To gain access, the doors must first be unlocked using the appropriate control.

WARNING

  • Always ensure that all doors of your Nissan Frontier are locked while driving. In combination with properly fastened seat belts, this significantly enhances safety by reducing the risk of occupants being ejected during an accident. It also prevents children or passengers from accidentally opening doors and helps deter unauthorized access.
  • Before opening any door, always check for approaching vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians to avoid potential collisions.
  • Never leave children, individuals requiring assistance, or pets unattended inside your Nissan Frontier. Unintended operation of vehicle systems or rising interior temperatures can lead to serious injury or even fatal consequences, especially on warm days.

The child safety lock system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to prevent rear doors from being opened from the inside, offering additional protection for children during travel.

These safety levers are located on the edge of the rear doors and can be easily adjusted.

When the lever is set to the LOCK position, the rear door can only be opened from the outside of the Nissan Frontier.

Using this feature is highly recommended when transporting children to enhance overall passenger safety.

NISSAN Intelligent Key system

Basic information

WARNING

  • Radio frequency signals emitted by the Intelligent Key in your Nissan Frontier may interfere with certain types of electronic medical devices. Individuals using devices such as pacemakers should consult the manufacturer of their medical equipment to understand any potential risks before using the system.
  • The Intelligent Key for the Nissan Frontier transmits radio signals whenever its buttons are pressed.

According to aviation safety guidelines, these signals may interfere with aircraft communication and navigation systems. For this reason, do not operate the Intelligent Key while onboard an aircraft.

When traveling, ensure that the buttons are not accidentally pressed while the key is stored in your luggage or carry-on items.

  • Always place the transmission in the P (Park) position and engage the parking brake when parking your Nissan Frontier, entering or exiting the vehicle, or loading cargo.

Failure to do so may result in unintended vehicle movement, which could cause serious injury, damage, or unsafe situations.

The Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier provides convenient access by allowing you to lock and unlock doors remotely or by using the request switch (if equipped), without removing the key from your pocket or bag. This enhances everyday usability and security.

However, the performance of the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key system can be influenced by environmental conditions, signal interference, and surrounding electronic devices.

Before using the Intelligent Key system in your Nissan Frontier, carefully review the following information to ensure proper and reliable operation.

CAUTION

  • Always carry the Intelligent Key with you when operating your Nissan Frontier to ensure uninterrupted functionality.
  • Never leave the Intelligent Key inside the Nissan Frontier when exiting the vehicle, as this may lead to unintended access or locking issues.

The Intelligent Key in your Nissan Frontier both transmits and receives low-power radio signals. These signals enable communication between the key and the vehicle, allowing seamless locking, unlocking, and starting functions.

Because the system relies on radio frequency signals, certain external factors may affect its performance. The following conditions may interfere with proper operation:

  • Operating near sources of strong electromagnetic radiation, such as television towers, power plants, or broadcasting stations.
  • Carrying or using wireless communication devices, including mobile phones, walkie-talkies, or CB radios.
  • When the Intelligent Key is in direct contact with metal objects or covered by metallic materials, which can block signal transmission.
  • When other remote-control devices operating on similar frequencies are used nearby.
  • When the Intelligent Key is placed close to electronic equipment such as personal computers or other digital devices.
  • Parking your Nissan Frontier near electronic parking meters or similar devices that emit radio signals.

If you experience issues with the Intelligent Key system in your Nissan Frontier under these conditions, adjust your surroundings or switch to using the mechanical key as an alternative.

The battery life of the Intelligent Key varies depending on usage patterns and environmental conditions, but it typically lasts around two years under normal use. When the battery becomes weak, it should be replaced promptly to maintain proper operation.

When the battery level is low, a "Key Battery Low" warning will appear in the Nissan Frontier’s vehicle information display, alerting you to replace the battery soon.

Because the Intelligent Key can continuously receive radio signals, storing it near devices that emit strong electromagnetic waves (such as TVs or computers) may reduce battery life more quickly.

Additionally, ensure that the main vehicle battery in your Nissan Frontier remains properly charged, as a depleted battery may affect system performance.

Your Nissan Frontier supports registration of up to four Intelligent Keys. If you need additional keys, or if a key is lost or damaged, it is recommended to visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for proper programming and registration.

Proper care and understanding of the Intelligent Key system will help ensure long-term reliability, convenience, and security for your Nissan Frontier.

Operating range

Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key operating range around request switch

The Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier operates only when the key is within a defined proximity to the request switch 1 (if equipped). This proximity-based functionality allows convenient locking and unlocking without removing the key from your pocket or bag.

However, the effective operating range of the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key can be influenced by several factors. If the key battery is weak or if strong electromagnetic interference is present, the system’s range may decrease, and functionality may become inconsistent.

Under normal conditions, the operating range is approximately 31.5 inches (80 cm) from each request switch 1 (if equipped), providing reliable access when approaching or leaving your Nissan Frontier.

If the Intelligent Key is positioned too close to the door glass, handle, or surrounding metallic surfaces, the request switch may not respond correctly. This is due to signal distortion or reduced communication between the key and the vehicle.

It is also important to understand that when the Intelligent Key is within range of your Nissan Frontier, any person can press the request switch to lock or unlock the doors, even if they are not carrying the key. For this reason, always remain aware of your surroundings when using the system.

Door locks/unlocks precaution

Nissan Frontier proper use of request switch and door handle precautions

  • Do not press the door handle request switch while holding the Intelligent Key directly against or very close to the handle, as shown in the illustration. In the Nissan Frontier, extremely close proximity may prevent the system from correctly detecting that the key is outside the vehicle.
  • After locking the doors using the request switch, always verify that the doors are securely locked by gently pulling the handle. This ensures that your Nissan Frontier is properly secured.
  • To avoid accidentally leaving the Intelligent Key inside the Nissan Frontier, always confirm that the key is in your possession before locking the doors.
  • Do not pull the door handle before pressing the request switch. If this occurs, the door may unlock but will not open. Release the handle and pull it again after unlocking to properly open the door.

Understanding the correct operating range and handling precautions of the Intelligent Key system will help ensure smooth, reliable, and secure use of your Nissan Frontier in everyday driving situations.

  • The request switch will only function when the Intelligent Key is correctly detected by the vehicle’s system.

Lockout protection

The Nissan Frontier is equipped with an intelligent lockout protection feature designed to prevent you from accidentally locking the Intelligent Key inside the vehicle.

If the driver’s door is open, the doors are locked, and the Intelligent Key is detected inside the Nissan Frontier, the system will automatically unlock all doors once the driver’s door is closed.

This added safeguard enhances convenience and ensures that you are not locked out of your Nissan Frontier, even in situations where the key is unintentionally left inside.

Understanding and properly using the Intelligent Key operation features will help you maximize both convenience and security when operating your Nissan Frontier.

NOTE:

When using the Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier, the doors may not lock properly if the Intelligent Key is held in the same hand that is pressing the request switch (if equipped). For optimal performance, place the Intelligent Key in your pocket, bag, or hold it in your other hand to ensure accurate signal detection.

CAUTION

The lockout protection system in your Nissan Frontier may not function correctly under the following conditions:

  • When the Intelligent Key is placed on top of the instrument panel, where signal detection may be inconsistent.
  • When the Intelligent Key is stored inside the glove box or other enclosed storage compartments.
  • When the Intelligent Key is left in door pockets, where it may not be properly detected by the system.

Basic information

The fuel system of your Nissan Frontier is designed for safe and efficient refueling. Proper handling of fuel and the fuel-filler cap is essential to maintain performance, safety, and emission system integrity.

WARNING

  • Gasoline is highly flammable and can become explosive under certain conditions. Improper handling may result in serious injury or fire. Always turn off the engine of your Nissan Frontier before refueling and avoid smoking or open flames near the vehicle.
  • Do not continue fueling after the pump nozzle automatically shuts off. Overfilling the tank may cause fuel overflow, which can lead to hazardous situations including fire.
  • Only use a genuine fuel-filler cap designed for the Nissan Frontier. It includes a built-in safety valve necessary for correct fuel and emission system operation. Using an incorrect cap may lead to system malfunction and trigger the Nissan Frontier malfunction indicator light symbol Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
  • Never attempt to start your Nissan Frontier by pouring fuel into the throttle body.
  • Do not fill portable fuel containers inside the vehicle or trailer. Static electricity can ignite fuel vapors. To minimize risk:
    • Always place the container on the ground while filling.
    • Avoid using electronic devices during refueling.

CAUTION

  • Do not use fuel containing more than 15% ethanol in your Nissan Frontier, as it may damage engine components and fuel system parts.
  • If the fuel-filler cap is not properly tightened, the "Loose Fuel Cap" warning may appear in the vehicle information display after several driving cycles. Ignoring this warning may result in the Nissan Frontier malfunction indicator light due to loose cap Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating.
  • An improperly secured fuel cap may also trigger the Nissan Frontier check engine light fuel system warning Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). If this occurs:

Tighten or reinstall the cap and continue driving your Nissan Frontier. The Nissan Frontier MIL active warning light should turn off after several trips. If it remains on, have the vehicle inspected by a Nissan dealer.

  • If fuel spills onto the body of your Nissan Frontier, rinse it off immediately with water to prevent paint damage.
