NISSAN Intelligent Key
Basic information

Type A (if so equipped)

Type B (if so equipped)
The Nissan Frontier is equipped with the advanced Intelligent Key system, which allows secure and convenient vehicle access and operation without the need for traditional key insertion.
Your Nissan Frontier can only be operated using Intelligent Keys that are properly registered to its Intelligent Key system and the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System. These systems work together to provide enhanced theft protection and ensure that only authorized keys can start the vehicle.
Never leave these keys inside the Nissan Frontier.
Up to four Intelligent Keys can be registered to a single Nissan Frontier. When adding new keys, all existing keys must be presented to a NISSAN dealer, as the system will erase previously stored data during registration and reprogram all keys simultaneously.
A key number plate is included with your Nissan Frontier keys. Record this number and store it in a safe place, such as your wallet — never inside the vehicle. This number is essential if all keys are lost and replacements are required.
NISSAN does not retain records of key numbers, so it is critical to keep your key number plate secure and accessible.
If at least one key remains available, duplication can be performed without the key number. However, if all keys are lost, the key number becomes necessary to create replacements.
CAUTION
The following conditions may damage the Intelligent Key used with your Nissan Frontier:
If an Intelligent Key for your Nissan Frontier is lost or stolen, it is strongly recommended to have its ID erased from the vehicle system by a NISSAN dealer to prevent unauthorized use.

Mechanical key
The Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key also includes a built-in mechanical key for emergency use.
To remove the mechanical key, release the lock knob located on the back of the Intelligent Key.
To reinstall it, insert the key fully until the lock mechanism clicks securely into place.
The mechanical key can be used to manually lock or unlock the driver’s door, tailgate, and glove box (if equipped) in situations where electronic access is unavailable.
CAUTION
Always ensure that the mechanical key is properly secured inside the Intelligent Key housing when not in use.
Valet hand-off (if so equipped)
When handing over your Nissan Frontier to a valet, it is important to protect your personal belongings by limiting access to certain compartments.
Provide the valet with the Intelligent Key only, while retaining the mechanical key and master key for yourself.
To secure the glove box during valet service, follow these steps:
1. Remove the mechanical key from the Intelligent Key.
2. Lock the glove box using the mechanical key or master key.
3. Hand over only the Intelligent Key to the valet and keep the remaining keys with you.
NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System keys
Additional or replacement keys for the Nissan Frontier Immobilizer System can be obtained as follows:
If you still have an existing key, duplication is possible without the key number. However, all keys must be presented to a NISSAN dealer for proper registration.
The Nissan Frontier Immobilizer System supports up to four keys. During registration, all previously stored key codes are erased, and only the keys present during the process will remain valid.
Any virtual key accessories (if equipped) must also be re-registered during this process.
Any key not included during registration will no longer be able to start your Nissan Frontier.
CAUTION
Do not expose immobilizer system keys to water or saltwater. The embedded transponder is sensitive to moisture and may fail if damaged.
Proper care and handling of your Nissan Frontier keys will ensure long-term reliability, security, and seamless vehicle operation.
In the Nissan Frontier, once the doors are secured using any of the available locking methods, they cannot be opened from either the inside or outside door handles. To gain access, the doors must first be unlocked using the appropriate control.

Child safety rear door lock

The child safety lock system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to prevent rear doors from being opened from the inside, offering additional protection for children during travel.
These safety levers are located on the edge of the rear doors and can be easily adjusted.
When the lever is set to the LOCK position, the rear door can only be opened from the outside of the Nissan Frontier.
Using this feature is highly recommended when transporting children to enhance overall passenger safety.
WARNING
According to aviation safety guidelines, these signals may interfere with aircraft communication and navigation systems. For this reason, do not operate the Intelligent Key while onboard an aircraft.
When traveling, ensure that the buttons are not accidentally pressed while the key is stored in your luggage or carry-on items.
Failure to do so may result in unintended vehicle movement, which could cause serious injury, damage, or unsafe situations.
The Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier provides convenient access by allowing you to lock and unlock doors remotely or by using the request switch (if equipped), without removing the key from your pocket or bag. This enhances everyday usability and security.
However, the performance of the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key system can be influenced by environmental conditions, signal interference, and surrounding electronic devices.
Before using the Intelligent Key system in your Nissan Frontier, carefully review the following information to ensure proper and reliable operation.
CAUTION
The Intelligent Key in your Nissan Frontier both transmits and receives low-power radio signals. These signals enable communication between the key and the vehicle, allowing seamless locking, unlocking, and starting functions.
Because the system relies on radio frequency signals, certain external factors may affect its performance. The following conditions may interfere with proper operation:
If you experience issues with the Intelligent Key system in your Nissan Frontier under these conditions, adjust your surroundings or switch to using the mechanical key as an alternative.
The battery life of the Intelligent Key varies depending on usage patterns and environmental conditions, but it typically lasts around two years under normal use. When the battery becomes weak, it should be replaced promptly to maintain proper operation.
When the battery level is low, a "Key Battery Low" warning will appear in the Nissan Frontier’s vehicle information display, alerting you to replace the battery soon.
Because the Intelligent Key can continuously receive radio signals, storing it near devices that emit strong electromagnetic waves (such as TVs or computers) may reduce battery life more quickly.
Additionally, ensure that the main vehicle battery in your Nissan Frontier remains properly charged, as a depleted battery may affect system performance.
Your Nissan Frontier supports registration of up to four Intelligent Keys. If you need additional keys, or if a key is lost or damaged, it is recommended to visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for proper programming and registration.
Proper care and understanding of the Intelligent Key system will help ensure long-term reliability, convenience, and security for your Nissan Frontier.

The Intelligent Key system in the Nissan Frontier operates only when the key is within a defined proximity to the request switch 1 (if equipped). This proximity-based functionality allows convenient locking and unlocking without removing the key from your pocket or bag.
However, the effective operating range of the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key can be influenced by several factors. If the key battery is weak or if strong electromagnetic interference is present, the system’s range may decrease, and functionality may become inconsistent.
Under normal conditions, the operating range is approximately 31.5 inches (80 cm) from each request switch 1 (if equipped), providing reliable access when approaching or leaving your Nissan Frontier.
If the Intelligent Key is positioned too close to the door glass, handle, or surrounding metallic surfaces, the request switch may not respond correctly. This is due to signal distortion or reduced communication between the key and the vehicle.
It is also important to understand that when the Intelligent Key is within range of your Nissan Frontier, any person can press the request switch to lock or unlock the doors, even if they are not carrying the key. For this reason, always remain aware of your surroundings when using the system.
