Nissan Frontier: Truck box

Tailgate

Nissan Frontier tailgate opening and support cable operation

Opening the tailgate

To open the tailgate on your Nissan Frontier, lift the tailgate handle upward and carefully lower it. The integrated support cables will hold the tailgate securely in the open position, allowing safe and convenient access to the truck bed.

When closing the tailgate of the Nissan Frontier, raise it gently and ensure both latches engage completely. Always confirm that the tailgate is properly locked before driving to prevent accidental opening.

Never operate your Nissan Frontier with the tailgate in the lowered position unless it is equipped with a Nissan Bed Extender (or equivalent) in the extended configuration.

WARNING

  • Never allow passengers to ride in the cargo area of the Nissan Frontier or on the rear seat when it is folded down. These areas are not designed for passenger safety and lack proper restraints, which can lead to severe injury or fatal consequences during sudden stops or collisions.
  • Transporting people in the truck bed of a Nissan Frontier is extremely dangerous. In the event of an accident, occupants in these areas are at a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death.
  • Do not permit anyone to occupy areas of the vehicle that are not equipped with proper seating and seat belts.
  • Ensure that all occupants in your Nissan Frontier are seated correctly and wearing seat belts at all times for maximum protection.

Disconnecting the rear camera

Before removing the tailgate of your Nissan Frontier, the rearview camera system must be safely disconnected. Follow these steps carefully to avoid damage:

1. Open the tailgate to access the rear camera connector bracket 1 located along the rear sill.

2. Remove the connector bracket 2 by pressing the locking tab inward (as illustrated) and gently pulling the bracket free.

3. Disconnect the chassis wiring harness 3 by pressing its locking tab and separating the connectors. Hold the connector firmly to prevent it from falling into the sill area.

4. Retrieve the protective chassis plug and bracket from the glove box and connect them to the chassis wiring harness. This prevents contamination of electrical terminals, which could otherwise cause malfunction of the rear camera system in your Nissan Frontier.

5. Reinstall the bracket securely into the sill.

6. Take the tailgate-side plug from the glove box and attach it to the tailgate wiring harness to protect it from dirt, moisture, and debris.

7. Proceed with tailgate removal. For detailed steps, refer to the section "Removing the tailgate" for your Nissan Frontier.

Nissan Frontier tailgate support cable release and removal process

Removing the tailgate

1. Release both tailgate support cables from their mounting points.

CAUTION

  • The tailgate of the Nissan Frontier is heavy. It is strongly recommended that two people handle removal or installation to prevent injury or damage. Always maintain a firm grip and avoid dropping it.
  • After disconnecting the support cables, do not allow the tailgate to rest against the bumper, as this may cause scratches or structural damage.

Proper handling of the tailgate and rear camera components will help maintain the durability and functionality of your Nissan Frontier, especially during frequent loading, unloading, or accessory installation.

2. Hold the tailgate of your Nissan Frontier at approximately a 15-degree angle to properly align it with the hinge system.

3. Carefully pull the tailgate outward from the left-side hinge at a slight angle, maintaining control to avoid sudden movement.

4. Once disengaged from the left hinge, the tailgate of the Nissan Frontier will slide out smoothly from the right-side hinge.

Installing the tailgate

1. Position the tailgate of your Nissan Frontier and insert it into the right-side hinge first, ensuring correct alignment.

2. Then guide the opposite side into the left-side hinge until it is properly seated.

3. While continuing to hold the tailgate at about a 15-degree angle, reattach the tailgate support cables securely on both sides.

4. Gently raise and close the tailgate, making sure it is firmly latched and properly aligned with the truck box of your Nissan Frontier.

Connecting the rear camera

After reinstalling the tailgate on your Nissan Frontier, the rearview camera system must be reconnected correctly to ensure proper operation:

1. With the tailgate still open, verify that the tailgate wiring harness is not hanging loosely or positioned below the tailgate edge.

2. Remove the connector bracket 2 from the rear sill by pressing the locking tab inward and gently pulling the bracket apart.

3. Disconnect the temporary chassis plug and bracket from the chassis wiring harness 3. Store these components safely in the glove box of your Nissan Frontier.

4. Disconnect the protective tailgate plug from the tailgate wiring harness and place it in a secure location such as the glove box.

5. Connect the tailgate wiring harness directly to the chassis wiring harness, ensuring a firm and secure connection.

6. Reinstall and secure the rear camera connector bracket 1 back into the rear sill to prevent movement or disconnection.

7. Close the tailgate of your Nissan Frontier carefully and confirm that it is fully locked.

Locking the tailgate

To secure the tailgate of your Nissan Frontier, insert the key and turn it toward the passenger side of the vehicle 1. To unlock, rotate the key toward the driver side 2. Always confirm that the tailgate is locked to protect your cargo.

Tie down hooks

Nissan Frontier truck bed tie down hooks for securing cargo

For added practicality, the Nissan Frontier truck bed is equipped with durable tie-down hooks located at each corner of the cargo box.

These hooks are designed to help secure loads effectively and prevent cargo movement during transport.

  • Ensure that cargo weight in your Nissan Frontier is evenly distributed between the front and rear axles to maintain stability and proper handling.
  • Always fasten all cargo using appropriate ropes, straps, or securing devices to prevent shifting, sliding, or tipping during driving.

WARNING

Always secure cargo properly in your Nissan Frontier using suitable restraints. Unsecured items may move unexpectedly during sudden braking or a collision, increasing the risk of personal injury or vehicle damage.

Proper loading and securing techniques will enhance safety, improve vehicle control, and help you get the most out of your Nissan Frontier truck box functionality.
