Basic information

The fuel system of your Nissan Frontier is designed for safe and efficient refueling. Proper handling of fuel and the fuel-filler cap is essential to maintain performance, safety, and emission system integrity.

WARNING

• Gasoline is highly flammable and can become explosive under certain conditions. Improper handling may result in serious injury or fire. Always turn off the engine of your Nissan Frontier before refueling and avoid smoking or open flames near the vehicle.
• Do not continue fueling after the pump nozzle automatically shuts off. Overfilling the tank may cause fuel overflow, which can lead to hazardous situations including fire.
• Only use a genuine fuel-filler cap designed for the Nissan Frontier. It includes a built-in safety valve necessary for correct fuel and emission system operation. Using an incorrect cap may lead to system malfunction and trigger the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
• Never attempt to start your Nissan Frontier by pouring fuel into the throttle body.
• Do not fill portable fuel containers inside the vehicle or trailer. Static electricity can ignite fuel vapors. To minimize risk:
  • Always place the container on the ground while filling.
  • Avoid using electronic devices during refueling.

CAUTION

• Do not use fuel containing more than 15% ethanol in your Nissan Frontier, as it may damage engine components and fuel system parts.
• If the fuel-filler cap is not properly tightened, the "Loose Fuel Cap" warning may appear in the vehicle information display after several driving cycles. Ignoring this warning may result in the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating.
• An improperly secured fuel cap may also trigger the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). If this occurs:

  Tighten or reinstall the cap and continue driving your Nissan Frontier. The light should turn off after several trips. If it remains on, have the vehicle inspected by a Nissan dealer.

• If fuel spills onto the body of your Nissan Frontier, rinse it off immediately with water to prevent paint damage.

To remove the fuel-filler cap:

1. Turn the fuel-filler cap counterclockwise to remove it from your Nissan Frontier.

2. Secure the cap by looping the tether strap around the hook 1 during refueling.

To install the fuel-filler cap:

1. Insert the cap straight into the filler neck of your Nissan Frontier.

2. Turn it clockwise until you hear a distinct click, indicating proper sealing.

Loose Fuel Cap warning

The "Loose Fuel Cap" warning message may appear in the Nissan Frontier vehicle information display if the cap is not properly tightened after refueling. This message may take several driving cycles to appear.

To clear the warning:

1. Remove and reinstall the fuel-filler cap correctly as soon as possible.

2. Tighten the cap until a single click is heard to ensure a proper seal.
