Nissan Frontier: Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Technical and consumer information / Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test

WARNING

A Nissan Frontier equipped with Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) must never be tested on a two-wheel dynamometer or similar equipment commonly used for emissions testing. Always inform testing personnel that your vehicle is a 4WD model before testing begins. Improper testing equipment can cause severe transmission damage or unexpected vehicle movement, potentially resulting in serious injury or vehicle damage.

Depending on local regulations, your Nissan Frontier may be required to meet a “ready condition” before undergoing an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) emissions test.

This “ready condition” is achieved when the vehicle has been driven through specific driving cycles. In most cases, regular everyday driving of your Nissan Frontier will naturally set the system to this state.

However, if the battery has been disconnected or a powertrain component has been repaired, the system may revert to a “not ready” status.

Before proceeding with an emissions test, verify the readiness condition. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) remains steady for approximately 20 seconds and then begins blinking for about 10 seconds, the system is “not ready.” If the MIL does not blink after this period, the system is “ready.”

If needed, it is recommended to visit a NISSAN dealer to properly prepare your Nissan Frontier for testing and ensure compliance with emission standards.
