Nissan Frontier: Electronic locking rear differential (E-Lock) system switch

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Instruments and controls / Electronic locking rear differential (E-Lock) system switch

Nissan Frontier electronic locking rear differential switch for enhanced traction control

The Electronic Locking Rear Differential (E-Lock) system in the Nissan Frontier is designed to improve traction in challenging off-road conditions or when the vehicle becomes stuck.

To activate the E-Lock system in the Nissan Frontier, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • The 4WD selector must be set to the 4LO position (for 4WD models),
  • The vehicle must be stationary or moving at speeds below approximately 4 mph (7 km/h), and
  • The E-Lock system switch must be turned ON.

Once activated, the indicator light will flash until the system fully engages. If the required conditions are not met or if the system disengages, the indicator will continue flashing.

When the E-Lock system is engaged in the Nissan Frontier, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is temporarily disabled, and the ABS warning light will illuminate. Additionally, the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is also disabled, and its indicator light will appear.

WARNING

  • Never operate the E-Lock system on paved or hard surfaces. Doing so may cause the rear wheels to slip during turns, increasing the risk of accidents and injury. Always deactivate the system after freeing the Nissan Frontier.
  • Use the E-Lock system only when necessary to free a stuck vehicle. Attempt to use the 4LO mode first before engaging the E-Lock.

Avoid using the E-Lock system on slippery surfaces such as snow or ice. This may lead to unpredictable vehicle behavior during acceleration, braking, or turning, potentially resulting in serious accidents.

CAUTION

  • Always turn off the E-Lock system after use to prevent unnecessary stress or damage to drivetrain components.
  • Do not exceed speeds of 12 mph (20 km/h) while the E-Lock system is engaged, as this may cause mechanical damage.
  • Do not activate the E-Lock system while the wheels are spinning, as this could result in drivetrain failure.
