Nissan Frontier: Child safety

Basic Information

WARNING

Never allow children to play with seat belts in the Nissan Frontier. Many seating positions are equipped with Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) seat belts. If a belt becomes wrapped around a child’s neck while ALR mode is engaged, it may tighten automatically and cause serious injury or even death. This dangerous situation can occur even when the Nissan Frontier is parked.

If a child becomes entangled, immediately unbuckle the seat belt to release them. If the belt cannot be unfastened, it must be cut using an appropriate tool such as scissors or a knife to ensure the child’s safety.

Children require constant supervision and proper protection from adults. They must always be correctly restrained when traveling in the Nissan Frontier.

In addition to the guidance provided in this Nissan Frontier manual, further information on child safety can be obtained from healthcare professionals, educators, government road safety authorities, and community safety programs.

Since every child is unique in size and development, it is essential to choose the most appropriate method of transportation and restraint for each individual child when traveling in the Nissan Frontier.

There are three primary types of child restraint systems:

  • Rear-facing child restraint
  • Forward-facing child restraint
  • Booster seat

The correct restraint system depends on the child’s age, weight, and height. Generally, infants up to approximately 1 year old and weighing less than 20 lbs (9 kg) should always be secured in a rear-facing child restraint system when riding in the Nissan Frontier.

Forward-facing child restraints are designed for children who have outgrown rear-facing seats and are at least 1 year old. Booster seats are intended for older children who no longer fit forward-facing restraints but still require assistance to properly position the seat belt.

WARNING

Infants and young children require specialized protection. Standard seat belts in the Nissan Frontier may not fit properly on smaller occupants.

The shoulder belt may sit too close to the face or neck, and the lap belt may not rest securely across the hips. In a collision, an improperly fitted seat belt can lead to severe or fatal injuries. Always use an appropriate child restraint system in the Nissan Frontier.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories mandate the use of approved child restraint systems for infants and young children.

A child restraint in the Nissan Frontier can be secured using either the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system or the vehicle’s seat belt system, depending on the seat and restraint design.

NISSAN strongly recommends that all children and pre-teens ride in the rear seats of the Nissan Frontier (especially in Crew Cab models), as this location provides the highest level of protection.

This recommendation is particularly important because the Nissan Frontier is equipped with front passenger air bags, which may pose a risk to children if they are seated in the front.

Infants

Infants should always be placed in a rear-facing child restraint system for as long as possible, and at least until they reach 1 year of age. This position provides optimal support for the head, neck, and spine in the Nissan Frontier.

NISSAN recommends selecting a child restraint that complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Always ensure that the chosen seat is compatible with your Nissan Frontier and follow the manufacturer’s installation and usage instructions carefully.

Small children

Children older than 1 year and weighing at least 20 lbs (9 kg) should remain in a rear-facing child restraint as long as possible, up to the maximum height or weight limit specified by the manufacturer.

Once they outgrow rear-facing restraints, they should transition to a forward-facing child restraint equipped with a harness system. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding height and weight limits when using child restraints in the Nissan Frontier.

NISSAN recommends using only certified child restraints that meet applicable safety standards and are properly installed in the Nissan Frontier.

Larger children

Children should continue to use a forward-facing restraint with a harness until they reach the maximum allowable size for that system.

After outgrowing the harness system, children should use a booster seat to ensure proper seat belt positioning in the Nissan Frontier. The booster seat elevates the child so that the shoulder belt crosses the chest correctly and the lap belt rests securely on the hips.

The shoulder belt must never cross the neck or face, and the lap belt must not ride on the abdomen. Proper belt positioning is essential for safety in the Nissan Frontier.

A booster seat may only be used in seating positions equipped with a three-point seat belt. Always verify that the booster seat is certified to meet applicable safety standards and fits properly in your Nissan Frontier.

Once the child grows enough for the seat belt to fit correctly without a booster—meaning the shoulder belt sits properly across the chest and the lap belt rests on the hips—the booster seat may no longer be required.

A booster seat should continue to be used until the child can successfully pass the following seat belt fit test:

  • Does the child sit with their back and hips fully against the Nissan Frontier seatback?
  • Can the child sit upright without slouching?
  • Do the child’s knees bend naturally over the seat edge with feet flat on the floor?
  • Does the seat belt fit correctly (lap belt low across hips and shoulder belt across the chest and shoulder)?
  • Is the head restraint/headrest properly adjusted for the child?
  • Can the child remain seated correctly throughout the entire trip?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” the child should continue using a booster seat with a three-point seat belt in the Nissan Frontier.

NOTE:

Local regulations may vary depending on your region. Always check applicable laws and requirements to ensure that your child is using the correct restraint system when traveling in the Nissan Frontier.

WARNING

Never allow a child to stand, kneel, or ride unrestrained on any seat or in the cargo area of the Nissan Frontier. In the event of sudden braking or a collision, this can result in serious injury or death.
