Nissan Frontier: Jump starting

To start the engine of your Nissan Frontier using a booster battery, it is essential to carefully follow the correct procedure and safety precautions outlined below. Proper jump starting ensures safe operation and helps prevent damage to the electrical system.

WARNING

  • Improper jump starting of the Nissan Frontier may cause a battery explosion, which can result in severe injury or even death. It may also lead to significant vehicle damage.
  • Highly explosive hydrogen gas is always present around the battery.

Keep all open flames, sparks, and smoking materials away from the battery area at all times.

  • Battery acid is extremely corrosive. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, clothing, or painted surfaces. In case of contact, immediately rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water.
  • Keep the battery and related components out of reach of children at all times.
  • Always use a 12-volt booster battery when jump starting the Nissan Frontier. Using an incorrect voltage may damage the vehicle’s electrical system.
  • When working near the battery, wear appropriate eye protection and remove any metal jewelry such as rings or bracelets. Avoid leaning directly over the battery during the process.
  • Never attempt to jump start a frozen battery, as it may rupture or explode, causing serious injury.
  • The Nissan Frontier is equipped with an automatic engine cooling fan that may activate at any time. Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from moving components.

Nissan Frontier correct jumper cable connection sequence for jump starting battery

WARNING

Strictly follow the correct jump starting procedure below.

Failure to do so may result in damage to the Nissan Frontier charging system and increase the risk of personal injury.

1. If using another vehicle as the booster source, position both vehicles so that their batteries are close enough for cable connection.

Ensure the two vehicles do not come into physical contact.

2. Apply the parking brake on both vehicles. Place the Nissan Frontier transmission in P (Park) and switch off all unnecessary electrical systems such as lights, climate control, and audio.

3. Turn the ignition switch of the Nissan Frontier to the LOCK or OFF position.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the proper order as shown in the illustration ( A , B , C , D ).

CAUTION

  • Always connect the positive (+) terminal to the positive (+) terminal, and connect the negative (−) cable to a suitable body ground point (such as a strut tower bolt or engine bracket), not directly to the battery.
  • Ensure that the jumper cables are kept clear of moving engine components and that the clamps do not touch each other or any unintended metal surfaces.

5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and allow it to idle for a few minutes to stabilize the electrical supply.

6. Increase the engine speed of the booster vehicle to approximately 2,000 rpm, then attempt to start the Nissan Frontier engine.

CAUTION

Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds at a time. If the Nissan Frontier does not start immediately, switch the ignition OFF, wait a few seconds, and try again.

7. Once the Nissan Frontier engine starts, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order—first the negative cable, then the positive cable.

Push starting

CAUTION

  • Do not attempt to push-start the Nissan Frontier. This may cause damage to the catalytic converter.
  • Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission cannot be push-started or tow-started.

Attempting to do so may result in serious transmission damage.

NOTE:

In Nissan Frontier models with automatic transmission, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate if low voltage is detected during the jump starting process.

This condition does not affect normal driving operation.

The MIL will turn off automatically once the system voltage returns to normal levels (above 12V) and the engine has been started several times.
