Basic information
The following section provides a detailed explanation of the scheduled maintenance procedures required to keep your Nissan Frontier operating at peak performance. These descriptions are intended to help you better understand why each service item is important and when it should be inspected or replaced. The maintenance schedule clearly specifies the mileage or time intervals at which each component of your Nissan Frontier requires attention.
In addition to these scheduled services, your Nissan Frontier also requires routine inspections during everyday use. These regular checks complement the maintenance schedule and help identify potential issues early, ensuring long-term reliability and safety.
Items marked with "*" are strongly recommended by NISSAN to maintain optimal performance, durability, and efficiency of your Nissan Frontier.
While some recommended items are not strictly required to maintain warranty coverage, other scheduled services are mandatory. Following the complete maintenance plan ensures that your Nissan Frontier continues to perform as designed.
When applicable, additional details and procedures for certain maintenance items can be found in the "Do-it-yourself" section of this manual.
NOTE:
NISSAN strongly discourages the use of non-OEM approved aftermarket flushing systems on your Nissan Frontier. Many such systems utilize chemicals or solvents that have not been validated by NISSAN and may cause damage to engine components or reduce system reliability.
Emission control system maintenance
Air cleaner filter: Replace the air filter at the specified intervals to ensure proper airflow and engine efficiency in your Nissan Frontier. When driving in dusty or harsh environments, inspect and replace the filter more frequently to maintain optimal engine performance.
Engine coolant*: Replace the coolant according to the recommended schedule. When servicing your Nissan Frontier, always use Genuine NISSAN Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an equivalent product with the correct mixture ratio to ensure proper temperature regulation and corrosion protection.
Engine drive belts*: Inspect the belts for signs of wear such as cracking, fraying, or improper tension. Replace any worn or damaged belts promptly to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
NOTE: Using non-approved coolant types or non-distilled water in your Nissan Frontier may shorten the coolant service interval and negatively affect the cooling system.
Engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and oil filter at the specified intervals to maintain proper lubrication and protect engine components in your Nissan Frontier.
Engine valve clearance*: Inspect valve clearance only if unusual engine noise is detected. Adjust as necessary to maintain smooth engine operation.
Fuel filter: No regular replacement is required, as your Nissan Frontier uses an in-tank fuel filter designed for long-term use.
(in-tank type filter)
Fuel lines/connections*: Inspect fuel hoses, pipes, and connections for signs of leaks, looseness, or deterioration. Tighten or replace components as necessary to maintain safety and proper fuel delivery.
Fuel tank vapor vent system*: Check vapor lines for leaks or looseness and ensure all connections are secure. Replace any damaged components to maintain proper emission control.
Spark plugs: Replace spark plugs at the recommended intervals using the same type originally installed to ensure efficient combustion and engine performance in your Nissan Frontier.
Chassis and body maintenance
Brake lines and cables: Inspect visually to confirm proper routing and condition. Look for cracks, wear, or leaks, and replace any damaged components immediately to ensure safe braking performance.
Brake pads and rotors: Check for wear, deterioration, and fluid leaks. Replace worn components promptly to maintain effective braking in your Nissan Frontier.
Exhaust system: Inspect exhaust pipes, muffler, and mounting points for leaks, corrosion, or damage. Tighten or replace parts as needed to maintain proper exhaust flow and reduce emissions.
In-cabin microfilter: Replace the cabin air filter at specified intervals to maintain clean air inside your Nissan Frontier. In dusty environments, more frequent replacement is recommended.
Propeller shaft(s): Inspect for looseness, physical damage, or grease leakage to ensure proper drivetrain operation.
Steering gear and linkage, axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots: Check for damage, looseness, and leaks. Under severe driving conditions, perform inspections more frequently to maintain handling and stability.
Tire rotation: Rotate tires according to the maintenance schedule to promote even wear and extend tire life on your Nissan Frontier.
During rotation, carefully inspect tires for damage or uneven wear patterns and replace them if necessary.
Transfer case oil (4WD models), transmission fluid/oil and differential gear oil: Inspect for leaks at the specified intervals. Maintaining proper fluid levels is essential for drivetrain longevity and performance.
Off-road maintenance: If your Nissan Frontier is frequently driven off-road through sand, mud, or water, inspect the following components more frequently to prevent damage and ensure reliability:
