Product description
The 2-pack HS top coat series is a high-solid, uni (solid-colour) top-coat system. Used for painting passenger vehicles.
The colour range is comprehensive due to a selection of mixture paints adjusted for this purpose.
Properties
♦ Easy to apply
♦ Fast-drying
♦ Excellent top coat flow
♦ VOC-conforming below 420 g/l
Suitable substrates
♦ Fully cured, solvent-resistant, well-preserved and lightly sanded old paint or original paint
♦ Surfaces treated with primer or surfacer
Suitable priming materials:
♦ Depends on the object and the substrate, in accordance with recommendations for paintwork structure
Substrate pretreatment
– Clean substrates thoroughly using silicone remover LVM 020 000 A5 or slow-drying silicone remover LVM 020 100 A5.
– Dry-sand using orbital sander, P400 to P500 grit dry sandpaper and dust collector.
– Or lightly sand wet using water-resistant P800 to P 1000 grit sandpaper.
– Use suitable cleaning agents for cleaning substrates to make sure that soiling and residue is removed completely.
Mixing ratio
– Prepare mixing ratio 3:1 by volume using the following hardeners:
♦ 2-pack VHS hardener, fast-drying LHA 009 050 A2 for small surfaces, spot repair
♦ 2-pack VHS hardener LHA 009 051 A2/LVM 009 051 A5 for small to medium-sized surfaces at medium temperatures
♦ 2-pack VHS hardener, slow-drying, LHA 009 052 A2/LHA 009 052 A3 for larger surfaces at medium temperatures
♦ 2-pack VHS hardener, extra slow-drying LHA 009 053 A2 for large surfaces and high temperatures
♦ See technical data sheets for → Chapter „2-pack VHS hardener“
– Prepare mixing ratio 4:1 by volume for 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt black L2K 073 3FZ A2 and 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt grey L2K 073 7DL A2 with 2-pack VHS hardener LHA 009 051 A2/LVM 009 051 A5:
Application
Application time/pot life:
– Ready for spraying: 60 to 90 minutes at +20°C.
Thinner
– Thin with 2-pack special thinner LVM 009 200 A2 or with HS spot thinner LVM 006 000 A2 or with 2-pack thinner, slow-drying LVM 009 300 A2.
– Note technical data sheet for → Chapter „HS spot thinner“ when using HS spot thinner.
Application viscosity
– Proceed with method of application: spray.
Application viscosity for +20°C material temperature.
– Observe application viscosity “Compliant” and “HVLP”:
♦ 18 to 20 seconds
♦ 18 to 25 seconds for 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt black L2K 073 3FZ A2 and 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt grey L2K 073 7DL A2
Thinner
– Add 12.5 % thinner at +20°C material temperature.
Spray nozzle and spraying pressure
– Adjust spray nozzle and spraying pressure according to manufacturer’s specifications:
Spray nozzleSpraying pressureAtomising pressureCompliant1.2 to 1.42.0 - 2.5 bar HVLP1.3 to 1.4 0.7 bar
Application
1.5 spray passes:
The first half spray pass forms a thin, uniform film.
Apply a full spray pass immediately afterwards.
– Apply recommended dry film thickness of 50 to 60 µm with 1.5 spray passes.
– If the paint hue does not hide well, it may be necessary to apply an additional spray coat after an appropriate flash-off time.
– Do not apply to horizontal surfaces.
♦ When repairing a minor damage, Clever Repair method, the 12.5% of 2-pack special thinner LVM 009 200 A2 can be replaced by 12.5% HS spot thinner LVM 006 000 A2.
♦ 2-pack HS top coat can be recoated with more of the same paint within 24 hours without intermediate sanding.
♦ The mixing colours in this mixing paint series can be used only as part of a colour formula.
♦ When using individual mixture paints alone, substantial variations from the specifications indicated on the product data sheet are possible.
Drying
Air drying at +20°C room temperature:
♦ Dust dry in 20 to 30 minutes
♦ Dry for assembly in 5 to 6 hours
♦ Dry overnight
Final flash-off time with force drying is at least 5 to 10 minutes.
Force drying at +60°C material temperature in 15 to 20 minutes.
Final flash-off time with infrared drying is at least 5 minutes.
Infrared drying of light colours with short-wave radiant heater:
♦ 5 minutes at 50% output
♦ Then, 10 minutes at 100 % output
Infrared drying of light colours with medium-wave radiant heater:
♦ 15 minutes
Infrared drying of dark colours with medium-wave radiant heater:
♦ 12 minutes
Infrared drying of dark colours with short-wave radiant heater:
♦ 12 minutes at 50% output
If a short-wave radiant dryer is operated at 100% power to dry dark colours, bubbles or blisters may develop when the next coat is applied.
Application
Plastification:
– First mix the base material with 15% of 2-pack plasticiser additive ALZ 011 001.
– Prepare mixture with 2-pack VHS hardeners, 3:1 by volume, with 15% thinner.
Structuring:
– First mix the base material with 100 % of 2-pack fine texture additive ALN 775 108.
– Prepare mixture with 2-pack VHS hardeners, 4:1 by volume, with 15% thinner.
– To achieve a uniform paint film surface, apply 2 spray passes with a flash-off time of 5 to 10 minutes between the passes.
Matting:
– First mix the base material with 100% of matting component ALN 775 106.
– To achieve a uniform paint film surface, apply 2 spray passes with a flash-off time of 5 to 10 minutes between the passes.
♦ For 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt black L2K 073 3FZ A2 and 2-pack uni (solid-colour) top coat, matt grey L2K 073 7DL A22, no further addition of matting component ALN 775 106 is required, as they are already set to a mat finish.
♦ The mixing ration with 2-pack VHS hardener LHA 009 051 A2/LVM 009 051 A5 is 4:1 by volume with 15% thinner.
